medication restrictions after?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am seriously considering the sleeve. I am on month 2 of the 6 month diet required by my Ins. and I have a consult scheduled with a surgeon.

So, several things have me interested in the sleeve.

1. No malabsorbtion issues (my mother has issues now from wls)

2. great track record of success.

3. I have heard you can still take NSAIDS after this surgery. (it is a no-no for

bypass). If you don't know what these are...they are anti-inflamatories.

(sp?) I take these on a fairly regular basis right now for my TMJ. I also

would like the option because what is I end up with bad arthritis when I am

older? (my mother has terrible arthritis and has had her knee replaced

twice now)

So, is it true you can take these medications after the sleeve? (assuming it has healed of course).

Thanks!

I was told to only take Tylenol post-op with VSG. But you can discuss that with your doc at the consult.

There are no medication restrictions with the VSG. We have a normal functioning stomach, it's just smaller. There is no pouch, or stoma for NSAIDs to get stuck in and cause an ulcer.

Some doctors still say no no to NSAIDS. But, all of the pioneers in the procedure say that NSAIDs are fine. I take Aleve on a regular basis, and have taken 800mg Ibuprofen without issue.

I think the jury is still out on NSAIDs and the VSG. One school of thought is that the potential for ulceration is there, and because we have teeny tiny tummies we can't afford to lose any of it. One surgeon mentioned to me (I have bad OA of the knee) that if I had to take a NSAID, take the liquid form and then drink afterwards to wash it out of the tummy.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
