A little update here...I went to bariatric lifestyles class last night at Richmond and I loved it. Then today I had my surgeon appointment with Dr. Im. I weighed in at 293lbs, so 27 lost!! I posted more details on my youtube video today but bottom line, I am at my goal weight!! I am seeing the psychologist tomorrow and if the case manager is available I will get my surgery date! Likely 1-1.5 months out but definitely before September. :) YIPEE!!!! Worst case scenario I wait to talk to the case manager but in any event, I'm READY! SOOOO excited!! :) I've done all the lab work and EKG and it's a huge relief. And happened SO fast! I just went to orientation on 6/14.

You go girl!!!!! Sooooooooooooo proud of you. You should get your date in no time. You dedication has paid off. Keep it up!:D

I went to the drop in follow up class with a Dr. and a NUt. and a therapist.

gonna get some blood work done, and do what the Nut. said- and hope that the dizziness goes away.

Hi Kaiser Peeps,

I'm just checking in to see how everyone is doing! It's been a quiet forum these days, so I'm hoping all is going well. I'm 7 weeks out and down 29 pounds since surgery on June 6th. Very happy about that! I know it's a no no, but I tried ice cream the other night during our bbq with some friends, and oh my gosh was it the WRONG thing to do. Wiped my stomach out. I also had some milk yesterday and it did a similar thing on a smaller scale since I didn't drink too much. I think I've developed some lactose intolerance that they warned me could happen. So far cheese doesn't bother me, and I hope that doesn't change. I love cheese! Anyone else having any weird food issues?

Talk to you all soon!

Darlene

Just wondering if anyone else has taken the nicotine urine test with Kaiser? I was just told that it can take 3 to 4 weeks to get the results back. I took mine last Wednesday and I am going out of my mind waiting. Those results have to come back negative in order to schedule my appointment with the Case Manager.

Not worried about the results since I quite a year ago in March, but the waiting is killing me. Just want to get this going already.

Thanks all,

Shell

Hi all,

I have been following this thread and perusing the forums in general since January. I started the process with KFH-Richmond in January and had surgery 07-25-11. My surgeon was Aarron Baggs MD. I started at 6'2" tall @ 330 lbs. I found the process with Kaiser Richmond to be fairly straight-forward and not a lot of fluff. I am happy they have you meet certain goals and do not rush the process. For me, it took time to wrap my head around removing part of my body, as it is not a natural act. Most staff in the Richmond program are great and each had their role to play.

I am tall, and my weight is well distributed. So, if it was not for the fact that my mother had a heart attack, stroke and was a diabetic before 50, I doubt I would have pursued this course. I am fairly healthy, SCUBA diver, swimmer and in decent shape, that said, I do have hypertension so it was just a matter of time before something happened to me.

Follow the directions given pre and post op by all staff members to a T. I can say I did and it was an easy process. Stay well ahead of pain management and use the PCA even if you do not have pain. Walk, walk and walk post-op, it really does help.

The med-surg floor is noisy at best and not a place to rest. Plan on waking to loud crashes and bangs by people who do not seem to care about those that are recovering.

That is my first post now that I have something to contribute. Looking forward to learning from those who have gone before me.

Regards,

DESERTDOC

Hi Desert,

Congratulations on your surgery :) This is a great place to get loads of information, especially immediately following surgery. I still have little pains or weird things happen, and it's comforting to know others are going through similar issues. Helps keep me grounded so I don't freak out over what is totally normal. Let us know how you're doing, and best of luck to you!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
