Reflections from a Skinny Chick

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I haven't posted in a long time, but it's long over-due. First, I just want to give a big shout out to my sleeve sisters and brother, learnedtobeskinny, vegasangel, and beardeditalian! It seems you all are having great success too and I am very happy for you all!

My name is Rose and I was sleeved in July 2009 by Dr. Aceves. I started at 271 and today I am 175. I have reached my personal goal in only 9 months! Things have changed so much, so very fast. Sometimes I just can't believe it myself! And my surgery has turned out to be such a success that it has inspired my mom and aunt to pursue getting bariatric surgeries too. Let me just say, that my mom gave me the most horrible time when I told her I was getting the sleeve. She was against the surgery and against going to Mexico. But here I am today, getting ready to send her off on her very own weight loss surgery journey. I can now wear clothes that I haven't been able to wear in over three years. It's the clothes I wore when I first met my husband, and that makes me feel so good!

I just want to say to anyone who is considering this surgery to go for it! There will be good days, and there will be bad days. There will be emotionally happy days, and emotionally terrible days. For example, I was so depressed Christmas Day because I couldn't eat as much as I wanted to. But the results are real and life-changing. Take your life back and do it for yourself! May God bless you all and give you the courage and strength during your journerys. :)

Thank you for your words of encouragement Rose! This sleeve thing is a wonderful thing if you let it be one. . you are so right about the emotional rollercoaster it puts you on, but like i said to everyone before, we knew what we were getting into so now there is no turning back. . we must accept it, and there is nothing as sweet as the taste of thin. . .

Hello. If you mean who was my doctor, it was Dr. Alberto Aceves in Mexicali at the Almater Hospital. He was an amazing man and had an amazing crew. I highly reccommend him and would go back to the Almater Hospital for any other procedure. Hope this helps.

Wow! It just continues to amaze me everytime I read about someone losing 100 pounds in 6 months or so. You should be very proud!

You are an inspiration!

Rose,

It is inspiring to hear stories such as yours. Thanks for sharing.

I've been hanging around this site for a couple of days now and yours is the only post I've seen with someone who mentioned being bipolar.

I'm bipolar - on Lithium and Depakote and fairly stable if you consider being depressed more than 50% of the time stable. Safe, though, and no mania, so that's good.

How well was your bipolar controlled prior to your surgery? Did losing weight make a big difference in your mood? What meds were you taking? Did you take your pills immediately after surgery (night of?). Did you have to make any adjustments in your meds after your surgery?

It's a lot of questions. If anyone else is out there with bipolar, I'd be interested in hearing from you too. Thanks to all for sharing.

Congratulations! This is actually my first post - new to this obviously! I am going for my informational session on Wednesday and hoping to get sleeved in the next 6 months. I was interested to know how you went about telling your mother. I know it sounds crazy since I am 38 years old, but I'm concerened that she is going to be upset. She too is overweight and has been for a long time, but just recently she has lost 30 lbs. through a lot of hard work and the passing of my father. Any advice???

Hey, I actually was in the same boat as you! I had a hard time talking to my family b/c I knew how they would react to my decision! I actually took my father to the seminar so that he could learn about it with me! I find that the skepticism comes from lack of knowledge! They need to be as informed as you if you want them to understand your decision! My mother is still negative about me getting sleeved! I have all my final appointments this month and should be getting my date at the beginning of September....so, hopefully I will be sleeved towards the end of September or October! :biggrin0: I love my mother, but this is YOUR choice and YOUR decision for yourself! You must do this for YOU and no one else! There will be people that are negative about your journey but there is a reason that you chose to start down this road.....hold on to your hopes and reasons b/c it will keep you confident in our decision!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
