what size bougie, and amt loss you have

Recommended Posts

See what makes me question this is because during the 'seminar' (approx 60 ppl there) I raised my hand and asked what size bougie. Dr. answered 40, not 'well it depends on the patient', that raised some flags (Dr. usually does DS), then when I see ppl on here actually talking to their dr about their sizes-more flags raised. Then when I again asked dr in the consultation she said she does everyone a 40. I understand its a tool and up to me/choices/lifestyle changes. But what is also up to me is learning everything i possibly can before surgery so there's no regrets. I want to be as informed as i can to make decision, why I'm asking all these questions from everyone here, which I appreciate so much. You guys have been so helpful and like a backbone of faith.

I agree that you have to research as much as possible, but in all honesty, the difference between a 32 and 40 is so minimal.

What I mean by "depends on the patient" is strictly about each individual patient's anatomy. Taller patients may have a longer stomach, shorter patients may have a shorter stomach, meaning a lot more goes into determining actual sleeve capacity than just the boughie size.

I have a 32fr size stomach, and even more of the top part of my stomach had to be removed due to a leak. My surgeon said mine is one of the shortest sleeves he's ever had to make. I still have amazing restriction, but I know that I can eat more of certain foods than some other patients on this board that have bigger sleeves. It's how my body tolerates food, it's how well I chew, it's that I take my time when eating, and take small bites.

My point is that the boughie size is not going to determine your overall success. It's a tiny part of the equation. I also agree with the others out here that have stated they have a bigger sleeve have experienced no nausea, no dehydration issues. I had horrific nausea and had to be put on Zofran (which is a drug they give chemo patients for nausea) for quite some time. I had already been on phenegran and reglan.

My doctor said he uses 38 on everyone. He said he has found less nausea and less overall problems using a 38 I guess he used to use smaller I'm assuming. At first I thought I felt hunder pangs which turned out to be stomach acid. Now I take prilosec and I am NEVER hungry. I have to remind myself to eat. My gherlin went in the trash for sure!

Dr. Alvarez used a 40-bougie on me with an oversew. My starting weight was 190 with issues of hypothyroid and tendonosis. My goal is to keep and maintain 65 lbs off. I'm 2 weeks out and have had no drama. Everything goes down without painful restriction and reflux - I feel the pressure to stop eating after a few ounces and have lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks. Hope this helps :001_tongue::)

I too have a 40f. I didn't suffer with nausea post-op and was getting in 20 oz of fluids on day 2. By day 5 I was up to 64 oz of Water and herbal tea. I can drink 16 oz of warm tea in just a few minutes. Everything goes down easily. I get full quickly on dense foods like yogurt. Tomorrow is my two week mark and I'm down 13 pounds. I love my 40f!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
