When to move from Mushies to Soft Foods

Recommended Posts

I am on mushies. (I love the mushies. - sf popsicles are my best friend) I have energy, I'm losing fine for me (not crazy fast, but I am fine with the steady progress). I can try some soft solids now, and I don't like them. I had two bites of scrambled egg out of a Breakfast taco, and I think the cook had laced them with lead. It felt like I swallowed buckshot. tuna is ok, but I still have it pretty soupy and I would prefer Soup. Is it bad to just stay on mushies, if you feel ok? For example, I still prefer applesauce that is thinned with applejuice rather than "straight" applesauce. I am a bit worried too that there is very little Fiber in my diet. Thoughts?

I went back to mushies off and on during my recovery because some foods just didn't settle well with me.

I still can't tolerate scrambled eggs. I make them for my husband once a week, and I always try to take a nibble with no such luck.

I really don't see much difference between mushies and soft foods.

I stayed on liquids and mushies a lot longer than I had to because solids just were not working for me.

Do whatever is comfortable for you. You'll figure out what works and what doesn't. As you get farther out from surgery, you will be able to add more foods back into your diet.

I guess one worry I had was I do not think I can begin my Calcium or Iron supplements until I am eating solids? I just do not want to delay those supplements and cause deficiency issues? Are mushies enough to accomodate adding those?

I take a multi-Vitamin twice day that gives me 200% of the DV of Iron so I don't have to supplement that one. I don't know the rules on iron supplements with/without food or what stage to start those. But, I did take calcium and Multi-Vitamin on my mushy stage.

I was advised to start taking Iron and Calcium immediately - even before surgery. I am on chewable versions of both.

Just don't take them at the same time. It's difficult sometimes to get the timing right when adding supplements.

Are you on an acid reducer? You aren't supposed to take Iron or Calcium within two hours of the acid reducer either.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
