I've been researching TX surgeons since my husband may get orders to San Antonio.

My top choices are:

Dallas area : Dr. Nick Lap Band, Gastric Bypass, Bariatric Surgery Dallas, Obesity & Laparoscopic Weight Loss Surgery Dallas, Plano Texas TX

San Antonio : I have not found any surgeons that accept our insurance so I am going to have to travel to Houston or Dallas.

Houston: Dr. Audencio Alanis

About Dr. Audencio Alanis M.D.

I've been doing as much research as I can about Dr. Veninga, and like you, I've come up empty handed. There are a few members on obesityhelp that have used him for other procedures, just not the sleeve. The good news though is that I haven't found anything negative :confused1:

fyi- he's also part of the TLCedge surgical group.

More than likely, I will end up using him too as he has an EXCELLENT cash price and he operates at a bariatric center of excellence. Good luck to you, and if I find anything else out or actually schedule my consult ( I want the money in hand for the surgery FIRST. Don't want to get my hopes up and have them dashed b/c I'm a bit short. I REFUSE to finance) I'll keep you in mind.

Hi Quarterhorse!

Thanks for the info. A co-worker and I are trying to do heavy research on sleeve surgery and I wanted to let you know that (and maybe you already know this) Dr. Veninga has done many other procedures but only about 15 sleeve procedures. Or at least this is what his office told us over the phone. Like you I will be a cash pay as well. I have my consult with Dr. Ganta in Austin on 1/14. Hope this helps and good luck on your research!!

Im from Houston, Tx (Woo-Hoo) and I was sleeved by Dr Audencio Alanis. I highly recommend him! I had an excellent sleeve experience. He is a great MD (I rarely say this because I am a nurse and I met lots of docs with horrible bedside manners) but not Dr Alanis! He's very personable. He came to see me early everyday....I absolutely adore him. I have referred 3 friends to him. He also believes in telling you the truth and being very upfront about the different types of WLS.....He doesnt sugar coat anything. I like that about him! He gets my vote, I know im biased! lol

I also don't know anything about Dr. Veniga. For anyone considering Dallas, I would recommend my husband's surgeon, Dr. James Davidson. He is very experienced in all kinds of baratric surgery including sleeves. We paid $12,500 as a total package, 2 night hospital stay.

Just a friendly FYI. Research demonstrates that once a surgeon has performed over 300 VSG's, their complication rate goes way down. In my opinion, experience is the most important factor in choosing a safe surgeon. Good luck in your research!

I had my surgery in San Antonio with Dr. R. Cavazos and am very happy with the outcome. . .he is a very gentle doctor and answers all questions. . .he is the medical director of NE Baptist Hospital and heads the bariatrics. . . very experienced in all aspects of bariatrics, including the sleeve. . . very professional staff and they don't just drop you once you have the surgery either. . . you follow up with him for the following year after surgery and it's included in the price of $15,500. You have nutrition/exercise class, you get support group, and you can call anytime you need to if you have questions. . . hope this helps, if you want more information PM me and i'll answer any question you have ok? Thanks

I too live in Austin. I traveled to Dallas and my surgeon was Nick Nicholson. I have been very pleased with all aspects of the process. He has had a lot of successful sleevers, and he does other procedures as well. I think the more versed the doctor is, the better. I mean they just have a greater knowledge of all the possiblities for weight loss and can guide you to the one that is the right fit for you. It was well worth the drive to have his expertise.

+1 for what barbannn said about Dr. Nick. As a self-pay for the sleeve, obviously price ($12K) mattered as a consideration but not the ultimate consideration. I wanted highly competent with a lot of these procedures successfully completed, low complication rate and someone who would answer all of my questions. Dr. Nick fit those requirements and I couldn't recommend him more! Also, his staff is great and very attentive to your needs.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
