pre-op diet... all liquids?

Recommended Posts

i kept hearing the pre-op diet referred to as the liquid diet, but when i got my sheet explaining what i should eat in a day, there is the option of a fruit or salad in between meals. is this something everyone does or just my doc?

From what I have seen on this board, every doctor has a different pre-op diet. Mine has you do 5 slim-fast shakes or bars a day and a sensible meal. Just follow whatever he tells you to do.

Hello Hope,

I have been on my pre-op diet since last Wednesday and I have to be on it until the night before surgery on Dec.2. Mine consists of this recommended diet: 4-5 Protein milkshakes 27 grams of protein each, protein bars high in protein but low in suger and fat, and 32-64 oz. of Water each day for 2 weeks. I have been doing ok. I have been having a hard time getting 4-5 each day. I get 3 in ok, but I am having to do another on around 2-3am so that I am getting enough protein. I do not have a difficult time with physical hunger, but sometimes like now on thanksgiving day I am having a hard time with head hunger. It is going to be difficult being around all that food and not being able to eat any of it. I just keep trying to remember that it will pay off in the end. My sheet said that if the patient does not adhear to the diet, it may cause complications during or after surgery and could even cause the surgery to be cancelled. I have been making them into more like ice cream by using those plastic mugs with water inside of them that freezes in the freezer before I make the milkshakes. When I make the shake I make double the amount and freeze some in those mugs for later sometimes, so that I don't have to do all the clean up so many times. I hope everything goes ok for you.

My surgery is on sunday. The diet says cheese, yoghurts chicken fish and no fruit at all.

Needless to say i havent stuck to it but have been having 4 shakes/soups a day from a previous diet i bought-(like slim fast) with a few little treats. Ive lost over 10 pounds in nearly 2 weeks so im hoping thats ok.

My surgery is at 5pm and i only have to completely fast for 6 hours before no other instructions.

I have a Question ????????????

I wander why that diet would not include fruit. My Protein milkshakes can have fruit in them. I have put bananas in them in the beginning, but now I am only putting pineapple in them. I hope I can find out soon because I only have until Dec.2 on the pre-op. I could always stop putting pineapple in them if there is a good reason not to do so. Thank you and have a Happy Thanksgiving day!!

Im not great at these things but dont the sugars in fruit turn to carbs= make the liver bigger?

Mountain Lover,

pineapple and Bananas are both VERY high in carbs. During pre-op we're tightly limiting carbs in order to shrink and firm up the liver so it can easily be moved during surgery. That's why the emphasis is on high Protein, low carb during pre-op.

Double check with your surgeon...but I would avoid the use of fruits so high in natural sugars.

Tracy

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
