Helllo,

My name is Lettie and I'm 27 yrs old. I'm a single mom and have been struggling with my weight for my entire life. I want to make a change... a permanent change not only for myself but for my baby. I want him to have a healthy mama that is able to play with him and watch him grow.

I'm currently in the works of getting the verticle sleeve. I went for my first consultation in mid-october. My head was set on getting the lap-band. My doctor advised that I should get the sleeve for various reason. I'm scared and nervous about it. The thought of part of my stomach being gone is freaky. I keep reading all of your blogs and seeing your pics and it been comforting to me. It tells me that everything will be ok.

The plan is to be sleeved in January 2010 ... and I can't wait to be given a second chance and to change my life. I hope this gives me the confidence that I need and to be a better mommy. :)

Congratulations. I had surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago. I'm 54 - I can't imagine how different my life would have been if I had done this when I was 27. My kids life probably would have been different too - I would have been more outgoing and willing to do more with them. It's not without problems - mine have been gastric reflux and belching - but it is still worth it. Just be prepared that you will have issues readjusting to food. Good luck - your life is about to change for the better. I also thought at first I would get the lap band, but it took very little research to convince me the sleeve was the way to go. I think you can tell by all the people that have had the band changed to the sleeve that the sleeve is a better choice.

Isn't weird how so many of us went in thinking the band was the answer, yet after a little research come out wanting the sleeve? My surgeon during the consult for my band procedure told me hands down that the sleeve is what I needed.

Ira(shortened it up a bit, hope you don't mind),

I am 37 and only wished I had had the opportunity you are seizing at such a young age. It seems to me your motivation is all of the right reasons, for you and your baby.

Good luck

Bill

I think you are making a wonderful decision to explore this surgery further. When I was debating between the two surgeries, I too was worried with removing so much of my stomach, but then I discovered that many people with stomach cancer have had this done for decades and lived normal, healthy lives. I also liked the permanency of the VSG. I don't ever want to be fat again, decided I didn't want something that could be changed.

Good luck! This is a great place to learn and gain support as you await your new life.

Thank you so much for the replys and support!!!!! It just means a lot. Did any of you have to go through "hoops" before getting approved for surgery? My surgeon has all these things that I have to do and pass before I can have it. For example tonight I have to do a sleep study test.

Hi Lettie, and welcome to VST. We're glad to have you join us.

Congrats on getting your life back. I consider the sleeve my lifesaver and changer. I had a band, and revised to the sleeve 8 months after getting the band placed. I had to have extensive bloodwork, chest xray, eKg, psych eval, and nutritional consultation with a dietician for the lapband. For the sleeve, my surgeon required the same tests/requirements except I was able to skip the nutritional consult.

Best wishes in your journey, and keep us posted on your progress.

I had to get a sleep study test, lab tests, a psychological evaluation, chest x-ray, and if I had a gall bladder, I would have needed a gall bladder ultrasound. For some patients they also required a pulmonary function test. It sounded daunting, but really it wasn't that bad, and it was well worth it.

I was going to get the lapband too. . .I finally convinced hubbie to come to a seminar with me after 1 1/2 years . . and when the seminar was over we were walking to the car and I asked him what he thought? he said "I won't support you with the band" I was so crushed and wanted to yell at him and tell him i didn't care i was going to get it anyhow. . .but i asked him why . . his answer nearly knocked me to the ground. . . "I won't support you with the band, but I will support you with the sleeve 100%" . . . wow, i asked why he said it was going to be cheaper in the end. . .with all the fills and complications that could happen, the sleeve was permanent and after it was done it was done. . . no fills no nothing and the seminar doctor said that if you don't get a leak after 2 weeks you won't get a leak and it sounded safer to hubbie. . . I was so happy. . . then i asked about going to Mexico cause it was cheaper. . . he just said NO! You're staying here and that's it. . . ok, ok, I'm not arguing. . . he said we could go on vacation another time. . . . eek

Congratulations. It sounds like you have a very supportive husband. I agree with him, the sleeve is the way to go - I had to be convinced - but I absolutely think you have made the right choice. Good luck.

I agree with your husband, that is one on the reasons I decided that I didn't like the band as much as I did in the beginning. Also I found out that I had an autoimmune disorder, so the band is not a good procedure to have. Some doctors will not do surgery at all, so when I found out that I could still have the sleeve I was so happy. I really have learned alot about the sleeve and so many people say good things about the results. I wish you all the best!!

I have been approved for the sleeve, and surgery in Dec.2.

Ira,

I had a sleep study done, two actually, and I am so glad that I did. My energy levels have sucked the last 3 years or so. I would be so tired come 4 o'clock in the afternoon that I would find myself nodding off, even when driving! I have been on the CPAP for 2 months now and I love it. I am not tired during the day, I wake up ready to go, and my mood has been much more pleasant. My family has pointed that out to me. I do hope that after I lose the weight I won't have to use the CPAP, but if I do, then so be it. If you have the syptoms they talk about, tiredness, waking up with a headache, etc. I would suggest doing it. Especially if you insurance is going to cover it.

Lettie -

Welcome to VST and congratulations on your upcoming surgery. I, too, went to a seminar set on the band; however, after hearing about the sleeve, and hearing the doctor say that if he needed to have WLS the sleeve is definitely the way he would go, I started researching the sleeve and decided on it instead of the band. And, I'm so glad I did -- I had my surgery in Mexico and the pre-op tests required were blood work, urinalysis, EKG and chest x-ray.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
