how much time out of work

Recommended Posts

I have my surgery on Tuesday, December 8th. I have an office job and plan on returning to work the following Monday. Is this realistic or do I need to plan for more time off?

I was only out for 1 week. Its sooo doable. You will still have some discomfort, but with a desk job, its tolerable. Just remember to get up and WALK. Don't sit all day. Good Luck you will LOVE your sleeve :-)

I think it's possible, but if you feel like I did, just expect to be really tired upon your return. If possible, try to clear off any major/intense projects before having surgery.

I had my surgery on a Wed. in Mexiciali, went home on Sat. and went back to work on Monday. I have a desk job as well. I felt fine. In fact, I felt like I could have gone back to work on Friday but I was required to stay in the hospital, bored out of my mind because I felt so good. I spent my time walking all around the neighborhood of the hospital.

I can't tell you how you might feel, but my surgery is Dec. 11 and I'll return to work Dec. 21 (luckily I will get 2 weekends out of it). I chose this date because I'll go back to work for 2 days and then be off for a few extra days around the holiday. I sort of have a desk job. I think you'll be good.

You will be fine. I was lucky and had extra time built up. So I stayed out for 3 weeks. I loved having extra time to pamper myself and get use to my new stomach. You will LOVE your sleeve- congrats on a surgery date!

I am 8th day post operative and I will return to work tomorrow. I did not even remove my stitches yet but I feel I am able to get back to work. also it will distract me and help me not to think about food all the time and stick to this liquid diet:(

I had my surgery last Thursday. This whole week has been a complete healing process for my stomach and head regarding food.

I can see and feel that after a week off, I would have been ready to go back to work next week.

You'll be fine to return to work - I have a desk job, too, and although I was really tired by the end of the day, I was able to function at the office without any discomfort at all. Just remember to get up and walk at least every hour and to sip, sip, sip while you work.

Thanks everybody. I know you have to take it easy, but it just seems amazing to me that you can have such a drastic thing done to your body and be able to bounce back so quickly. I wish my hysterectomy several years ago had been as easy. Of course that wasnt laproscipic so maybe that is one of the big advantages.

I had surgery on August 26th. I went back half days on Sept 9th, 10th, and 11th. I returned full time on Sept 14th.

I could have gone back full time on Sept 2nd or 3rd if I was really motivated or had no vacation to use. I was not that motivated to return to work. It was also nice because for the first 2 weeks my life revolved around my stomach (what it needed, belch, Water, acid blocker, what do you want?) and getting in fluids and Protein.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
