In the beginning, you may not be able to gulp down Water. I know I couldn't for several weeks. Now, I can take pretty hefty swigs of water, definitely not gulps, but nice drinks. I can also drink cold water without any issues.

I agree it is weird. Not to scare you more, but I can't drink from a straw. It puts too much air in my tummy, and it hurts.

In the beginning, you do have to sip, sip, sip. My instructions were 2oz every 15 minutes. I had to do this for the first couple of weeks.

It's temporary. There are adjustments to everything we put in our mouths. Even now 3 months later, I'm finding that some things just don't work.

I know VegasAngel can drink through a straw without any issues.

Haha, this is an issue for me too. I love chugging a big cold glass of Water especially in the super hot summer. I'm going to focus on eating ice - maybe that will be ok?

About 2 weeks out of surgery.... I really had no issues at all. I can not guzzle a 24 oz in 2 minutes but I can drink all I need and or want.....

I can drink a 20 oz bottle of Water in about 5 min. I drink 24 oz of water to get all my meds down in the morning and it takes me less than 5 min cause I am usually late for work.

I was worried about this too... I use to "guzzle" everything!

But in the beginning it was a hard adjustment, but after hurting, you LEARN. Now at 6 months out- I still can't "guzzle" but I can take really big drinks that satisfy me.

You'll do just fine, it's adjustments like something as small as drinking that we have to work on.

I find that I want to drink with my meals now, but have to really work on not doing that, or drinking too soon after a meal.

If I am really thirsty when I am eating, I will take a sip of Water and it doesn't seem to matter. The reason to not drink with your meals is it's supposed to make us get hungry faster but I don't think a sip will cause that.

I am a bad Bobby (but some of you know that already). I actually take very tiny sips of Water when I eat. Not gulps, but little sips. Hope this does not doom me to be fat!

I have found that the more time I have in post-surgery, drinking is getting easier. No, big gulps do not work, but normal drinks do. I look at it as being the same as my eating patterns. I used to gulp food, hardly take breaths between bites, and think that the more I could get shoved down my gullet the better. Now, I slow down, in both drinking and eating, and I am getting along just fine! The Water is not an issue for me at all.

I too sip Water with my meals. I was always a 3-4 glass drinker with meals pre surgery. I might have 1-2 oz max at meals now. My glass might be 1/2 to 3/4 inches down at end of meal at the most.

As far as regular drinking I cannot do cold drinks. I can only put 1 maybe 2 ice cubes in a 16 oz glass. If more I get spasms. Is not worth it. Hurts too bad.

My experience is that a sip or two will not hurt. But if I do more than that, I can eat more at that meal and if I don't wait at least 30 min, but preferably 45, I do get hungry sooner.

I have actually deliberately sipped a drink with a meal in order to fit more in. I wanted to fit in and also sample everything available. I still ate about half what everyone else ate, but it's a slippery slope so I try not to do that more than a few times a year on special occasions.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
