Starting My VSG Journey. Surgery Aug. 11

Recommended Posts

So i did all my pre-admitting and labwork yesterday so i think i'm ready to go for Aug. 11th. Less than a week away! WOW!

My BIGGEST fear is that i won't loose weight. I mean i know i have to do my part and i'm VERY willing to do that but what if i'm just the fluke person who doesn't loose anything!?! Those are my biggest fears right now b/c i have been on so many diets. I have done well (lost 100 lbs) and not so well and gained it all back and i have tried every diet out there that promises weight loss and they haven't worked so here i am with all my fear hoping beyond hope that this time it will be different!

Anyone else ever had those type of fears before surgery? How did you overcome them?

I think everyone thinks they will be the one that the surgery doesn't work for and the only way to overcome the fears is to have the surgery and watch the pounds start to melt off ... some lose faster than others; however, in the long run, we'll all be losers.

The sleeve will work as long as you work with the sleeve!

You are really close to surgery!

It is interesting to read about someone with different fears than mine. Mine are more morbid I guess :blushing:. It never crossed my mind that I might not lose weight. I knew if I ate less I would lose weight. It is hard to eat less when you are always hungry. With a smaller tummy you will be less hungry. I know if I could just get a little help I will lose weight and I know you will too!

This time will be different. Make sure you stick with the diet plan. Not just the mushies and such but a long term change the way you eat plan.

I've feared the same thing! I guess you're probably still in the hospital. Look forward to hearing about your experience. I'm having my surgery tomorrow!:lol0: Hope all went well for you.

Actually... my understanding is that when we are over weight... like the rest of our body our liver becomes fatty and enlarged/ The liver is located close to the stomach.... by attempting to lose some of the fat from this organ, it is easier for the surgeon to operate...

It is similar to... as a child i was consoled that i was big boned, and that is why i was overweight... when in actual fact when you carry extra weight... your bones become bigger to support that weight....

I have the same fears. I am really worried I will gain the weight back after all the expense and trama to my husband. I diet so well. I was even in an ad. Ihave gained it all back plus. I am so afraid I will do the same again. I have not schedualed surgery because of this fear. I know there are no guarentees. I keep lurking here to see if any long term people report in. I really want to do this, I just do not want to set myself up for failure again. :sad0: my first smilies. Ha

After much research, I proceeded with the sleeve gastrectomy and am now 1 week post op.

Like many on here who have had eroded bands removed there was complications.... my surgeon found a abscess on opening, and was unable to do the procedure laproscopically....he also placed a feeding tube in below my stomach.... and I had substantial swelling post op.

My recovery has been extended, however today is my last day in hospital... my temperature is normal, IV antibiotics have been ceased, feeding via the tube has been ceased, and now all I have to prove is that I can tolerated diet and fluid.....

I have to say two days ago, I wondered if I had done the right think, however today.... after my first puree meal I am sure I have..... I have had a bowl of Soup and about half a cup of puree meat and vegetables, and feel very satisfied....

This is only the beginning of my Vertical sleeve journey...... however like my surgeon I feel very positive about it.?..

Hi, i am doing really well now, have lost nearly 10 kg now... which is about 21-22 lbs, and am back at the weight i was when i had my band removed.... enjoy the restriction i have, it just seems more normal to eat small amount and to feel satisfied, and find that eating with the sleeve is much easier than with the band

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
