Yesterday, I had not one but TWO meals out. I was a little nervous because the first meal out was with a good friend from work who did not know I had weight loss surgery (WLS) and the second was dinner with family members.

I had a very early MD appointment and skipped Breakfast as my friend wanted to meet for brunch. She chose the international house of pancakes. The last time I ate breakfast out was literally years ago and I have not been to IHOP in well over ten years. There were 3 of us and 2 had the usual breakfast. I searched the menu and selected what I found to be the best bet; a spinach salad with apples, diced chicken cutlet and about 2 tablespoons of finely shredded cheese. I had them hold the hard boiled egg (hate them) and serve the balsamic vinegrette on the side.

I started with a few bites of the chicken, ate one wedge of the apple, a few fork fulls of the spinach leaves, and was stuffed. I had a huge portion left so I offered some to the 2 other ladies saying I was full. They each shared it and only a few spinach leaves remained. Nobody questioned why I was eating so little and the conversation flowed. One down, one to go.

Dinner out was to Celebrate my brother's birthday and his oldest daughter's graduation with her Master's degree. It was me and 6 family members and they decided on a diner. I had brunch at 10:45 AM and dinner was 7:00 PM and I ate nothing in between. They wanted to go to a diner. I ordered an appetizer of baked clams (4) and a turkey sandwich with mayo on the side. I gave away one of the clams, ate 3, and could not eat anymore stating I was full. Everyone was eating and talking and sharing food and nobody cared what I was or was not eating. It helped that my petite niece ordered stuffed mushroom appetizer as her meal (no wonder she's a size 1). The waiter wrapped my sandwich up and I took it home. I'll use the turkey on a salad... several salads. LOL.

Clearly, the get together is far more important than what someone is eating or not eating. I had no reason to worry and my secret was safe. Since childhood I have always been on one diet or another so me eating light was natural and not questioned by family or friends.

My advice... don't worry about social gatherings involving food. Just go and enjoy the occasion and the people. Nobody cares what you do or do not eat.

I think we are farrrr more aware of the quantity of food we are eating than others. People really don't pay much attention. I do, now I do.... I'm shocked at the amount of food people stuff themselves with. But before WLS I never paid attention to what folks were eating.

We do get pretty wrapped up with what others think and in reality, everyone is always on a diet. If you don't eat much and someone notices, "I'm cutting back on calories a bit" is totally doable.

I find it amusing to watch the other people eat. I watch them eat and wonder where they are putting it.

When I very first had the band, my son and I would share a plate. I was only questioned once, and I pulled the little Lapband card out of my wallet, and said " do you need more of an explanation? " The manager came over and apologized. We ordered an "adult" meal, and my kiddo ate most of it. I got the spare plate. We were just at a Logan's Steak house, and I never had any other problems with any other restaurants. My mom, brothers, and step-dad were the only ones who knew at Christmas time that I had lapband done. My evil step-sisters still don't know, and they won't know about the sleeve. No one noticed at Christmas that I ate tiny portions, and steered clear of all the Desserts.< /p>

Do they give those cards for the sleeve?

And your evil stepsisters were probably too busy stuffing their faces with desserts to even notice ... or were happy you weren't eating them, as it left more for them.

No, I didn't get a card for getting the sleeve. I have to take those out of my wallet, update the DMV with my clotting time disorder, and the fact that I have a sleeve now.

The evil step-sisters are naturally thin. Well, T is a size 2 after 3 babies all under the age of 5. M is really evil, she's ballooned up because she was recreation taking Prozac when he husband left her. She's now remarried to a heavy guy, and once told my step-dad "I don't know how you can go from having mom (size 2, big huge fake boobies) to having Allison (my mom)." She was a size 20 at the time of their marriage. It's been hard being around them and my mom and step-dad have been married for 9 years this upcoming November. They always made horrible comments about my weight, and me as a person. M made comments this last Christmas such as " how did she ever land him?" (talking about my husband being so good looking). I'm hoping this year at Christmas, it's a different story, it's just so defeating. T and I have gotten so much closer, she's let it all go for the most part, and really has embraced the marriage between our parents. . .

I am glad I still have my card that I got when I got the band. I've rarely had to use it. If anything ever happened to it, I would get another one from my band dr. They don't know I had my band removed, and I have no reason to tell them. It just says I had WLS and it doesn't say anything about which kind.

I don't even like eating out anymore. I used to love going out to eat. Now I find it to be a waste of not only money but also a waste of time. I am not hungry and I really don't even want to eat. I love it!

I got to wear an outfit today that I don't think I would have ever fit into again if I still had my band.

Well as for the comment about landing him, I'm afraid I would have had to say "Maybe because I'm not a bitch like you are and maybe because he sees what a good person I am on the inside and isn't as shallow as you." and gone right on eating my dinner ...

Luckily, my dad married my stepmom when I was 4 ... my stepsister was also 4 (we're 3 weeks apart in age) ... there were 7 of us ... 1-1/2, 4, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 15. My dad had custody of all 4 of us as my mother abandoned us when I was 3. My mom had her 3 ... so we were about like the brady bunch +1 ... 4 boys, 3 girls. My parents have since divorced; however, my stepsister and I remain very close and my "mom" although not legally my mom will always be my mom...if that makes sense.

Glad you and T are working things out - maybe she's finally seeing what a great person you are and all you have to offer ... and maybe she's seeing that your mom makes your dad HAPPY

I got a card with my sleeve. It also has a picture of my surgery on it and info for the ER, if you have a complication, and my surgeon's contact info.

Restaurants don't have to honor them though so I never use it. I just get a to-go box.

But you can download your own card from the internet if you want. The card can sometimes make it easier to explain...

Cool - where can I do that? I'd like to have it to carry with me in case of an emergency. We don't eat out all that often, and if we do, we generally end up splitting it anyway, so no big deal on that.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
