What is with this lactose intolerance?

Recommended Posts

I already posted about the night I found out my dad broke his hip. We were all scheduled to take him back to Oregon with me. My daughter and great SIL were willing to let him move in with them. My daughter is an

RN, was the director of an assisted living home, and spent a lot of her nursing school days working in nursing homes. Sbe felt that she was the best person to care for him since he fell and broke his pelvis in April.

After leaving the ER and realizing this was now all down the tubes, I headed straight to the Dairy Queen for a blizzard. Talk about self destruction. I've already experienced what ice cream does to me. I spent the next several hours on the toilet. In one way it was great. My brother who is a big ol pot head had come down here to AZ to help me and had done nothing but lay around in the back yard getting stoned the entire time he was here. Time was running out, and my dad's apartment needed to be emptied out. So, while I was experiencing what ice cream does to me, my brother worked his behind off, cleaning my dad's pig stye of an apartment.

So why is this? I can eat yogurt with no trouble. I think it's really good, because ice cream really has always been my big downfall. I'd like to know why it does this though, just for the heck of it.

No actually, my brother lives in Chicago, where I am originally from.

I didn't think the Dairy Queen uses frozen yogurt.

I wish someone who has been sleeved awhile could answer this question. On The Other Board, they talk about the lactose intolerance all the time. I just don't get it.

Does anyone know if it's sugar or milk products? I can eat yogurt without any problems.

Even if it was milk or cream, I'm sure it was loaded with sugar. From all the board I've read sugar seems to set off a lot of people and set them off quickly.

I was born allergic to milk so I have to limit the amount of dairy I eat. Two ounces of goat cheese on two Wassa crackers is one of the lunches I enjoy. If I have that, I don't have anymore dairy.

Here's the nutritional value for a SMALL blizzard:

Calories: 675

Fat: 26 g

Total Carbs: 102 g

It's basically all fat and carbs and very unhealthy. I think I would die if I drank it. LOL.

Protein: 12 g

I have always heard that DQ uses ice milk, not ice cream .... either way, it's milk ... and I am sure there is a lot of sugar added for flavor. Guess the reaction is one way to keep you from doing that again huh?

Our stomachs are touchy early out and different people seem to react to different things. I couldn't drink straight milk at first. Now I can drink some, but not more than 8 oz. (It used to be 4oz. so I'm improving.) But I could have stuff with milk in it and made from milk.

But some people can't do Tomato Soup or OJ.

And some people have trouble with eggs.

It just seems to depend...

I am already lactose intolerant, so I avoid milk, ice cream and definitely whipped cream ... I can eat cheese and yogurt no problems and limited SF pudding... if the milk is heated - like Tomato Soup, it doesn't seem to bother me. I've even tried soy and rice milk with the same results as regular milk. Needless to say, I'm not EVEN going to be trying any milk products for quite some time following surgery. The gastrointestinal issues I have from dairy products is enough of a deterent to even consider trying anything along those lines. Whipped cream is the absolute worst ... I ate it one night and thought I was going to have to go to the ER I was in such excruiating pain. Once my g/f stopped laughing at me for the "self-inflicted pain" she told me a holistic remedy to help alleviate it. Also discovered a heating pad on the belly helps immensely ... I will be bringing mine with me to the hospital.

It's great actually. Every time I go by the dairy queen now, I look at it and feel sick. I love that!

I've enjoyed milk and dairy my whole life, then all of a sudden about a year ago I can't tolerate drinking milk. The gas and bloating is so painful. I switched to Lactaid milk and can drink it with no problem. I can eat every other dairy no problem, so I don't understand. I'm not sleeved or banded yet, just wanted to let you know that sometimes it can just be age and hormones I think...so maybe you will only have a problem with ice cream, who know?

That seems to be the answer to everything for me these days ... age and hormones ... that's what my gyno tells me, my PCP, my dermatologist ... grrrrrrrrr :biggrin0:

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
