Heart Stent and Lap Band

Recommended Posts

Hi, I currently have a stent and I am in the process of being accepted for the Lap-Band. I am nervous about going thru the procedure and having a heart condition. Anyone else have an issue like this and how did you get thru it?

i don't have the condition but would advise getting clearance from your cardiologist for the surgery.

I have one artery that was occluded in 2 places and they put in one long stent as opposed to 2 smaller ones.

I have another artery that is/was 100% blocked, resulting in a damaged necrotic area of the heart muscle....it went un detected and miraculously the blocked artery compensated on it's own and grew branches ...bu the damaged heart muscle will never re-generate....

That was 1-2 years before my Lap band Surgery...THAT and the fact I had other co morbidities only reinforced the fact that my health was seriously in decline and I needed to loose weight or I would not be on this earth very much longer....

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a direct result of high cholesterol, and other body fats floating in the bloodstream clogging and restricting blood-flow...causing heart attacks, strokes, and other severe circulatory problems (infections, amputations)

The best treatment for this is to loose weight, get one's eating habits totally under control....I was told that this is what I must do or ELSE!!!

Problem was, I could not loose weight on my own...I have tried and FAILED 100's of time over the last 30 years....the ONLY thing, and my LAST RESORT was to have corrective surgery, altering the WAY I eat, the AMOUNT I eat, and WHAT I eat....something the band does for me, and something I cannot do on my own...

My lap band surgery was completed close to 3 years now...I have lost ALL MY EXCESS weight, my blood work has been 100% normal for 2 years now....I'm close to 62 years old and run 5 miles a day, plus lift weights....I play softball and can perform like someone half my age....

I go through "Nuclear Stress Tests" every 12 months, and I perform splendidly...My cardiologist says I am one of HIS success stories, although the credit should go to my bariatric center.....

So, should someone with Stents consider Lap Band surgery??? Do you have a better alternative??? Do you want to continue following your current path of treatment???

Like my PCP told me when recommending the surgery, loose 75 lbs and this will ALL GO AWAY!!! HE WAS 100% CORRECT!!!

It is no exaggeration when I say Lap band not only CHANGED my life, it SAVED my life....

I'm reminded of the passage "It's the sick that need a Physician"

Wow! Very motivating story. Congratulations on all the hard work that got you to this place -- what a great thing to really take back your health like that. I can't wait to be banded and look forward to more ease with exercising. Can't picture running five miles a day but I'd sure like to be able to climb the mountain we live near, go bicycling, dance the night away. Thanks for the inspiration.

There was a time I could not carry groceries into the house without getting short of breath and having to stop and rest.....

Back to heart Stents...I would say that having the stent placed would make an individual READY for surgery, having taken care of the problems...as opposed to facing surgery before identifying the problem and taking care of it....

B-52 . . . Thank you! I am only 41 and have two younger kids. I do get winded bringing in groceries, carrying laundry down the steps and even watering plants. I do need help. I can't exercise because I am too short of breath. I can't loose weight because I can't exercise. Tha ja for your story and inspiration.

B-52 . . . Thanks for your note. It does give me a better feeling. Very scary. I am only 41 and have two younger children. This whole process is definitely going to be strange, but you are right. . . What is the alternative. I want a longer life for my husband and children but also for me! Thank you again!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
