Hello - This is all new

I am a new member and not sure what I am doing. I am meeting with my doctor on 4-9. Any suggestions for what questions I need to ask him? I am just starting the process of getting approved for the band.:)

First thing I would ask is how many bands has he placed and then I would ask if he has a support group. The support group is very important as far as I am concerned.

Chris has a very good suggestion. If I were choosing a doctor now I'd be interested in what the doctor's POV is on this procedure and, especially, the followup.

But if you're already in with this doctor and don't want to change, for whatever reason, then you should ask for WRITTEN instructions on eating in the postop period. Ask for a rundown of danger signs--as well as what is NOT a sign of something being wrong. (For instance, lots of people think the post-op gas pain is the band slipping, or pulling a stitch, or a heart attack, or whatever.)

And ask him how you and he will decide when a fill is indicated. It just kills me when doctors put pressure on their patients to lose weight before or without a fill--as though the band itself should be enough to help. The doctor should always be willing to discuss a fill if you think it's needed (after the first six weeks, that is), and not be married to some sort of predetermined schedule.

Thanks for the input. I am not willing to change doctors at this time because he is local and my ob-gyn recommended him.

What is the minimum amount of lapband surgeries should he have done to be confortable in doing the operation and follow-up? I have read any where from 30 to 50. I know that he has do approximately 10 to 12.

My other question is - Do all doctors require the full gamate of testing? I just went through back surgery in Feb. and really don't want to go through everything again.

Hi MSKS,

Here are some questions I found online and asked my surgeon on the first appointment:

1. What types of obesity surgery procedures have you performed?

2. How many of each weight loss procedure have you performed?

3. Do you perform this surgery using minimally invasive techniques? (laparoscopic)

4. Can I be considered a candidate for surgery even though I have one or more associated health conditions related to my obesity?

5. Which weight loss procedure is best for me? Why? What are the risks involved?

6. How long will I be in surgery?

7. What is the length of my anticipated hospital stay?

8. How long will it be before I can return to pre-surgery levels of activity?

9. How will my eating habits change?

10. Do you have information about obesity surgery costs and payment options?

11. What is the typical excess weight loss and improvement of associated health conditions for your other patients?

12. Do you have patients who are willing to share their experiences, both positive and negative?

13. What information can you give me to help family and friends better understand this surgery?

14. What type of long-term, after-care services (such as support groups and counseling) can you provide for me?

15. What do you expect from me if I decide to choose a surgical solution?

Then you could ask him about the testing that needs to be done before the band. My surgeon requested an EKG, CBC(blood test), Psych eval, and a visit with a nutritionist but they all are a little different. If your surgeon has not done the usual required 50 cases, it might be that he has just started doing them. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't do a good job(from what I've seen, what is really necessary for the surgeon is that he/she be a good laparoscopic surgeon), you may instead ask him how long he has been doing laparoscopic surgery. Hope all this helps.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input. The first appointment with my dr. went well and now the waiting game for approval for my insurance has started. The suggested questions were VERY helpful.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
