How do you answer ?

Recommended Posts

What is your response when someone asks, "so, how much have you lost?l

well, i usually say, this is what i have (gained)....my mobility and my self esteem as this means MORE to me than what the number i have lost...TRUTH 100%......sure i have lost alot but i had alot to lose and still do.....i say this because if someone had trouble (simply walking) as i did a mere 14 months ago, me saying me walking again is what i'd answer..

Wow thanks all for replying. I don't know how I want to answer yet. I feel that it is kinda personal, and no ones business. I guess I figure the only ones that need to know are my kids and hubs. Everyone else to me doesn't matter and don't need to know.

This has started happening to me a lot lately, especially with my patients. Those don't bother me, but I have this one co-worker that asks every single week and it drives me nuts.

It does depend on whose asking, but I generally just say ...after they say something like, wow you look great,....AND before they can ask how much...I say "Thank you, your so nice to notice! I've worked hard at it." That generally stops them from prying into My Business. Only my husband knows I have the band (which he fully supports)... And generally He adds in also that I feel so much better with the weight loss. Which I do!. Nobody pushes for the actual pounds after that.

Politely I say mind your own 'f' business. That is one thing I will not share. My sons don't ask me and I don't tell anyone except my husband. A family friend asked and when I told my MIL she couldn't believe how rude that person was for asking.

Next week starts the Jewish New Year and I will be seeing people I have not seen in one year, so it will be the same answer, personal info I do not share.

I feel ashamed for letting myself get to 268 pounds is the truth and at this time in my life I can't share pounds lost. Maybe years from now I will tell. Most people I will see at the holidays have no idea I had WLS, another personal thing I don't share.

Shana Tovah!!!

Usually I give the actual number. If people are local they probably saw the commercial and it is on the screen. But I know others who simply respond with "a lot". Because while they are really asking about the number on the scale, we have all lost so much more than just weight. We have lost depression, self hate, confinement from activities, and the list goes on.

For those who are just starting and don't have a huge weight loss yet, you have already hit a huge milestone just admitting you have an issue and starting to address it.

Remember that when people ask that, I don't think most of them mean to be rude. I think most of them mean it as a compliment, that they can really tell you are really on the way to being a healthier you. Hug their neck and say thanks for noticing.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
