What's the deal with chicken?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 8 months post-band, and I have been able to tolerate chicken very well until recently. I have PB'd TWICE in two weeks on chicken. What's up with that? The 2nd time happened last night while I was at the mall with DD in the food court. You know how some of the restaurants have bite-sized pieces on a toothpick for you to sample? Well, I sampled 3 different varieties of chicken back to back. BAD IDEA!!! I knew one piece was kinda dry, but I figured, hey, I'll just wash it down with some Water. Ouch, ouch, ouch!!!! Then it happened... eyes started tearing up, heart began pounding, chest hurt. I had to make a mad dash for the parking lot and out it came.

I don't understand why I have been able to eat chicken before, but now all of a sudden I can't! Oh well,,, I guess I'll have to add this to my list of foods to avoid.

Hi Cissy

I was banded February 15th, 2006 by Dr. Spiegel and sometimes that happens to me too. You may have ate them too fast or took too big of a bite? Sometimes I forget to take small bites or eat slower and then that first swallow goes down and I know I just screwed up and then like you I'm making a dash somewhere to get it up. That is such an uncomfortable feeling! Try eating the chicken again but take smaller bites and wait a few more seconds before you take another one and if that doesn't work, add it to the list.....Hope that helps?

More importantly, drinking on top of any blockage only spells TROUBLE. Picture a rock inside the small end of a funnel?? Anything poured on top of it is bound to backwash because it has no place to go, right?

I experienced this last night. I feel at this point, just to freakin not eat chicken anymore. It was very moist but Protein textures are hard and it is just not going down right... like a ball. My first human reaction is to wash it down with Water but it felt like i wasn't able to breathe so where does it go??? Only way but up.

:) (sighs) I hate food

Leatha, I never thought of it this way. Thanks for the info! The light bulb just came on for me.

Do you think you might need an adjustment on your band?

I haven't been banded yet.......BUT I SURE DO LOVE ME SOME CHICKEN! I couldn't put that on the list. So sad!

Of all things, I've never had a problem with chicken whatsoever. I simply chew it until it's basically dissolved and honestly, lost most of my weight eating it religiously. Now, back to the darn chicken for me...

Everytime I've had something stuck everyone around me says "take a drink, take a drink". But it just doesnt work. The only answer is to wait till you feel the clunk and grind as it finally goes through.

My guess is that if you ate a bit of chicken off a toothpick you probably took too big a bite, 3 in a row spelled disaster.

I don't even try to eat chicken anymore unless its been cooked in a stew for like 4 hours :)

Same with steak/beef and most other meats

I just cannot eat pre-cooked/grilled meats at all without severe PB

I'm only just daring to eat toast 3 months after banding ... don't eat bread otherwise which is annoying cos i used to love Subway

What annoys the hell outa me is that i can't eat good healthy foods but i still find myself cheating myself and eating junk occasionally .... whats wrong with me? i spent £8000 on something fix me and still it hasn't hit home....i'm seriously thinking about seeing a shrink or something to figure my weird wired brain out

I used to love Subway too. I haven't even touched bread since the day before my first adjustment back in October. Quite frankly, I'm afraid to, which is wierd because I can eat croutons no problem. Hmmm?

How big a bite should you take of meat? Should it be diced in little tiny pieces? I realize I can't take big bites like I used to, but am not sure how small they should be?

I'm not at a point where I can eat solids yet - I want to be ready!

Thanks!

what about fish?

I haven't had any problems at all with fish, or any seafood for that fact.

How big a bite should you take of meat? Should it be diced in little tiny pieces?

Imagine eating with an oyster fork or cocktail fork. That's about how big your bite should be.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
