If in doubt ask QUESTIONS!

Recommended Posts

Ok, before surgery I had very general instructions about diet protocol for week 1,2,3...ect and was told that when i saw the Dietitian he would make more specific recommendations for my particular diet.

FYI: these general instructions were chaotic at best, not well defined... like a disorganized run on sentence that lasted 4-5 pages. So I could not wait to see the dietitian in hopes of really distinguishing parameters for my diet.

So just before week two I had my apt with the dietitian. He told me in a few days I would be starting mushy's and named greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, egg whites, and tuna salad as examples of foods I could have.

Ok, here is where it went SOUTH! At the end of our brief visit he repeated the above but said: tuna salad, but you absolutely cannot have the bread, so you will have to find other things that you like.

I thought really, you can't just throw me a bone and give me some hints ... I should have asked for clarification!

(He had a very dry disposition, did not make a lot of eye contact, basically did not look up from the papers he was scribbling on. Our session was 10 minutes tops & my husband, like myself, was thinking --what a waste!).

-- So I took what he said very literal! --

Boy was i W R O N G!!!

I googled what could you replace bread with when eating foods like tuna salad.... lettuce... seemed to be the winner. Did not go back and review those chaotic general instructions and thought these were my new guidelines.

Holy Smokes.... week 2, first follow-up apt with my surgeon. The day before I had a spoonful of tuna salad on a piece of lettuce (palm size) and thought I was doing great and chewing well. When my surgeon reviewed my fluoroscopy films he saw ...you guessed it... lettuce! No damage to my LB but appeared as though I was just on my own little rogue diet !!

I take responsibility: My Fault - My Lap-band!

There was no discussion about eating the lettuce but you better believe I am going to dissect those general instructions and put them into some kind of order that I can relate to; that make sense to me; that prevent this from happening in the future.

So when in doubt ASK QUESTIONS!

agree

as all doctor's are different

always best to go by what one's own doctor says

Everybody's doctor has different guidelines. For example, my doctor is very anti-carb... no bread, rice, Pasta, potatoes, etc.

Other than following his guidelines about when to eat Clear liquids, full liquids, mushies and solids, and following "how" to eat, concentrating mostly on Protein, I pretty much listen to my body. For example: I will eat bread, but I just make sure it's high Fiber, whole wheat. Sometimes I'll have Pasta or potatoes in very small portions.

For the most part, I'm concentrating on eating healthy, losing weight, but I don't want this to feel like a "diet"... I've never been successful at dieting, hence the need for surgery.

I found my dieticians recommendations and menu planner to be very vague. It was almost as if they want you to make meals out of no more than 20 ingredients for life hahahaha.

And that is why lbt can be such a useful tool where real people are coming up with plans that work and that are safe. We share our experiences and our knowledge. Most docs/support staff are not intimate w/ the band (meaning htey dont have one) to realize the full complications to come up with a better and more thorough plan for the patient. What strikes me odd is that a doc could make heaps of $$$ if he made a book..just saying lol

chicken salad is like one of my favorite all time foods. I've gotten pretty good at making a healthier version. Instead of the bread I eat it as a "dip" using cucumber slices as the "chips". Works awesome and I get to feel like I'm eating a bunch when I'm really not.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
