I know that many times being overweight and fatty liver disease goes hand in hand; I knew for many years I have had it. But before my surgery a mass was found in my liver. After an MRI they said nothing to worry about. Durring my surgery on 6-26 the surgeon said my liver looked gray with lumps all over it so he took a bysopy. It came back low liver function and irregular cell groth. My doc said I need to see a liver specialist ASAP. Liver GI office says yes you need to be seen ASAP then gives me an appointment November 22nd!! I am freaking out! I know everyone is different and I will have to wait for something concrete but according to my general doc loosing weight can help the liver regenerate & cause the function to go back up. Has anyone had there liver bounce back after weight loss?

I have been told I have a fatty liver, but never had a biopsy.

I have read about liver functions returning or improving with weight loss.

But really NOVEMBER is ASAP????

They may want to wait that long so they may be able to see improvements by then in your liver functions???

If they were too concerned they would make room for you before that date..

Try to stay positive!!!

I hope I have helped!!!

Don't second guess, liver disease is serious. You need to know exactly what the biopsy revealed. Fatty liver disease can be controlled by diet and losing weight. But if there is more than that involved, you really need to know asap.

They told me they would call if someone canclled sooner but it's been 2 weeks already. Here in St. Louis have called 4 hospitals to get an appointment, 3 booking in Nov, other Oct. I will just have to keep calling to see if someone cancelled or maybe try in Illinois.

Have you let the original dr know that you can't get appt until Nov? I've learned that you can get in to see specialist if another dr requests it.

I so agree... Find another DR. I also have N.A.S.H. Or fatty liver. After my banding I was pushed to the front of the line....to get my liver on the recovery. Losing weight and exercise is the key. Must get started before the liver hardens.

That seems like a long time to wait. Have your doctor call for a sooner appointment. You may get seen next week. Good luck!

I was able to get an appointment earlier. It was yesterday. Glad I was able to get in, I'm at stage 3 of 4 of non alcoholic liver cirrhosis. 80-90% of my liver is nonfunctional scar tissue. Nothing they can do but watch it till it falls all they way then transplant list. I'm in the hospital all day today for more tests.

Prayers going your way. I too am fighting with this disease. My liver is not as far as yours but I am going to get the weight off and exercise to get the liver healthy again or as healthy as I can. I believe getting banded may have saved my life in so many ways. Wishing you the best.

Thanks everyone. It's going to change the way I use the band also. The liver doc says can only loose 5-10lbs a month. Anymore than 10 will damage my liver more and cause it to swell. I have to find a balance to loose slower. I lost 17lbs this first month. She advised to raise my intake slightly with only low impact exercise such as walking. Overall weight loss will be good, just have to go slow.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
