Port Area Hurts Big Regrets

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling pretty much the way you are. I'm still real sore . But I have been excercising light toning & treadmill 40 mins every other day . Doc said that was ok. I have continous pain on the left side and I also have been waking up 2 -3 times a night . I hope the discomfort goes away. Good luck .Keep in touch.Sandra

:)Hi Tidge. When I woke up in the recovery room, I remember the first thing I felt was this tremendous pain in my stomach (port sight!) and it wrapped around to my back. It was horrible!! I said to my Mom several times over the first week after surgery "what did I do to myself?" I would have never believed how different I would feel once I got about about 8 or 9 days out from the surgery. Things began to heal and I started feeling human again. I am almost 4 weeks out from surgery and still have tenderness and swelling in my port sight. I asked the Nurse Practitioner if this was normal. She said it is. I truly believe that when they attach the port to the muscle, it refers pain around to the bacK. A heating pad felt wonderful on my back. Give yourself time to heal. You will feel like a different person next week at this time!! Everyone reacts differently to surgery. I know some people that bounced back within a couple days. We, unfortunately, were not that lucky but it will get better! Best of everything to you.

Hey Tidge. My pep talk was too late! But heartfelt nonetheless! How are you doing now??:)

I was so relieved when I found this site after my surgery as I too had terrible port pain. I found out that some do and some don't. I had to take the strongest pain meds they sent me home with for nearly 10 days. I also have been told in the past that I have a high pain threshold, so I don't think I was being a whimp. I on the other hand did not get the shoulder pain. Take the pain meds, use a heating pad, try to walk around, it does help to get rid of the gas pain. Take comfort please, in knowing it does get better and you will not be sorry. This is a big step and it takes time. Good luck!

It'll be okay. I think worse than the physical pain is the mourning for your old existence. It's scarey to know that you took this step and your life will never be the same.

Keep reminding yourself of the reasons that brought you to take this step, and you'll get through.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
