One drawback to not drinking with meals...

Recommended Posts

I had Thai tonight for the first time since being banded, a nice red chicken curry, and the waitress asked the normal question 1-5 (level of spiciness) and I automatically told her 5. Not being able to drink while eating was quite a challenge, but man was it good (and hot).

I love thai food! I haven't even considered spice with no liquid because everything I eat now is so tame! Thats pretty funny though...I'll keep that in mind when I finally venture out for some spicy curry!

I can no longer eat spicy foods....at least not the way I use to add Cholula Hot Sauce to EVERYTHING....

Early on , I had big issues with reflux, as the majority of people with WLS experience....

I simply cut back and in some cases did away with hot spicy foods and I have not had any reflux issues in a long, long time.

I have read many stories about people automatically blaming the band, getting it unfilled, and eventually not loosing weight all because they blamed the band, and not their eating habits.

Spoke with my surgeon about this....the thinking i with the pouch, I eat less food, confined in a smaller area, so the effects of the spicy foods is concentrated and has a more intense effect...

Once I visualized this, I have had no more problems with reflux....

If people can get away with it, that's a good thing...but me, the reflux and thought of ulcers, etc and ultimate failure at this journey was enough.

Not drinking with my meals is, for me, the toughest of all my band rules. I can live without bread, Pasta, rice, cakes, fizzy drinks, and everything else I no longer indulge in. But man, how I miss sipping Water with my food!

Haven't had the reflux issue due to spiciness, and I even have cholula's on my popcorn. Personally, I always figured the stuff my stomach produced to digest the foods was worse than what I was putting down there. One of the mysteries of the band how it treats each of us differently.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
