one last airplane ride before I'm banded

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is set for July 11th - the last week in June I will make my final flight before the band and i'm filled with all the dread - will i fit in the seat? can i get the belt to buckle? will the person next to me be so small they won't be put off by my hip spilling underneath the arm rest? I always vacillate between hoping i'm next to a small person who doesn't take up their whole seat anyhow - and a big person who we can at least commiserate together (even if we're totally smushed together).

I'm just so glad this group exists - I'm aiming to lose around 125lbs - and knowing there's a group out there in a similar place as me gives me great comfort.

I hope by the time of my next flight (which I'm hoping won't be until August) I'll be able to report back that the seatbelt was no problem!

Hang in there aviva. I just flew recently after dropping 63 lbs. and the difference was amazing. I fit in the seat no problem, I buckled the belt and even had extra to tighten, the armrest went down...and stayed down instead of riding up my hip and the tray table went down without my having to move my belly out of the way. It was the best plane ride I'd taken in years. You will have that same experience as well and it will be just as exciting for you as it was for me. Good luck!

Aviva - welcome to the group!

I feel ya on this one. During my two week pre-op diet, I had to fly up north for business. I rarely fly anywhere, and it never occurred to me that the seat might be an issue. Just side stepping to the window seat was humiliating, but I was thrilled that the middle seat between the window and aisle was empty. I lengthened the belt, settled in, and as I put my hand down to the side of my thigh (to feel how much it was spilling over), felt even MORE sure that my decision to have this surgery was the right choice. I vowed that the next time I go on an airplane, it will be a WHOLE different scenario :P I kept thinking to myself......how did I let things get this bad. But the GOOD news is, I/we are doing something about it!

not having to automatically lengthen the seat belt all the way out (or sift immediately to the back of clothing racks in stores) is something i really look forward to!

I am glad you made it through the flight. We used to live in Germany and even though I was glad to come stateside, I was always terrified of where my seat would be on the 10 hour flight!

Wait I just noticed your tracker. Are you being banded today? That is great!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
