Big time constipation 3 weeks post surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I've had some big time Constipation issues this past week and not to be gross but an having a very hard time passing hard large stool!

I drink a ton of Water, eat a lot of black Beans, do any idea why this is happening? I'm not eating high fat or starchy stuff, I've stayed on routine with the post OP diet and have lost about 40 pounds.

Thoughts?

Are you using Protein supplements too? I was having some issues and did some research and protein can be constipating. I resorted to milk of magnesia this week myself. I would think the Beans would add some Fiber to counteract it. Good luck!

If it is really just not moving try Magnesium Citrate. It comes in a liquid form, they have a flavored and a non-flavored which I think you can mix with something like juice. You can take a little or a lot depending on your needs. Good luck

Try taking a stool softener, like Colace, every morning. It will help you get more regular without all the cramping of a laxative. Once you're not so bound up anymore, stop the stool softener and switch to a fiber supplement to keep things continued moving.

Oh and drink LOTS and LOTS of Water. It really does help a lot.

(btw, I have the same problem and this is what I have done to help it)

This is just my experience, but I want you to be aware so it doesn't happen to you. I took magnesium citrite (half a bottle) and ended up with the most extremely painful cramps and diarrhea the entire next day. I used it one time before and it worked fine. I don't know what happened this last time, but I will never use that again. My doctor said dulcolax suppositories will get things moving faster. Not sure if they cause cramps because I was already cramping badly.

I had the same thing happen with a laxative, it was horrible. I spent the whole day in bed, in tears, because the cramping was so severe.

That pain was worse than any of the post op pain!

I take fiber gummies and Gummy Probiotics now and i go everyday at least once a day. I also used to struggle with Constipation. I used to take stool softeners everyday at first and they didn't work for me so I started the fiber and probiotics and man they work.

Its the high Protein causing Constipation. Try some peri colace it will soften the stool plus help you go. Mirlax is also good but expensive. Or you can do what we old nurses used was a cocktail of prune juice and milk of magnesia called a black and white. Also prune juice does help if its warm.

I too am 3 weeks post op and at my last doctors visit he suggested Colace, I have been successful since! I am still working on getting more Water in me. Prior to surgery I was very regular and was taking a probiotic every morning. Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
