Thought i knew what i wanted...

Recommended Posts

Not sure this adds any value... but I did gastric bypass in 2004 when I was 24. It changed my life, it was good, I recommend it.

But, life and divorce happened, and after consulting with a doc, I went with band over bypass a couple of weeks ago.

I like what Carolina girl said in the thread. Sums it up well.

The lap band with plication is the route I went. I originally wanted just the stomach stapled. But it all works depending on the person getting the surgery. It all works if you want it to! Best of luck!

For me, I didn't want to be cut up. I saw two different surgeons. The first one I saw was insistent on the sleeve. The 2ND one let me choose. The thought of being cut and having organs rerouted scares me. How will I know if staples come out? If I have a leak? If I'm bleeding internally? Scary stuff....

My thought on the band was it was not physically changing my anatomy, less invasive and reversible.

I personally chose the Lap Band because it seemed like the logical starting pointing. If something goes wrong with my band I can have it removed, but if something goes wrong with the Sleeve, you can't get back the 75%-80% of your stomach they cut out. I simply couldn't justify hacking out the majority of my healthy stomach.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
