question on weight loss

Recommended Posts

I wanted to ask if anyone was having problems losing weight before the surgery? I say this because most over weight people don't have a problem getting it off but do keeping it off. And I can't seem to get but 25 pounds off on my own no matter what. I'm just afraid to get the band if I have some other problem. I do have hypothyroidism, but it is supposed to be in check. If my body's metabolism is messes up from not eating enough will the band help with that. I read the band tricks the body into thinking it is not in starvation mode thus speeding up the metabolism. Insight anybody?

Stept, Do you really need to ask if any of us have problems losing weight? We all do or we wouldn't have this surgery! Sorry, just giving you a hard time

"I read the band tricks the body into thinking it is not in starvation mode thus speeding up the metabolism" ???

Nope. The band only slows the passing of food through a small pouch. Nerve endings in the small pouch send signals to your brain that you've eaten enough and dims your appetitie. That's it in a nutshell. It doesn't restrict how much you can eat, it doesn't store food in your pouch, it doesn't make you eat less, it only helps you to know when you've eaten enough.

There's so much more than just this and you will have to read this forum to learn more or buy Jean McMillans book "Bandwagon" or Alex's book "The Big Book on the Lap-Band". link is below.

And it is a lifestyle change... big time. You have to commit and want it.

TMF gave you great info.

The only thing I would add is that you should have your thyroid and medications for it double checked before getting the Lap Band. If your thyoid is out of whack and slowing your metabolism then the band won't help.

It's really important to get your medical issues under control first.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
