Why does the band physically prevent some people from over eating and some it does not? Like me!

I think that's because some people are more in tune with their band than others. For those that listen to their band and how it feels, they don't want the uncomfortable feeling that comes with over eating.

For those that don't listen to their bodies and band, they usually are too driven to eat to even care about the sensation it's creating. Plus, it's also very easy for people driven to quantity eat to learn how to eat around their band. It's unfortunate but it happens.

And to add to Missy's post, I believe there may be a small population of patients who cannot sense or have no sensation that they have eaten enough and continue to be hungry. Since we can't get into someone's mind, it could happen?

i agree esp with the part of some not caring or paying attention to the signs from the band that say, hey, i am here.....let me work...some seem sooo heck bent on losing 20+ pounds a week and stress if they dont...let the band work.....

.let me add, i had my 10 month post op last week and asked why can i feel restriction with the band and some dont and he said he didnt have an answer as he said he didnt know...he said some do and some dont....i am one who does.

I also think there is a range of what those feelings can be.

For instance I often read that people no longer eat- bread, meat, chicken, veg etc etc as they can't. Well is it because they can't or because it is uncomfortable to do so? If it is the latter then is that good or bad? I find the uncomfortable feeling prevents me eating more than anything else does.

Now I know that eating should never be uncomfortable but that does seem to be 1 of the side effects of the band. If you avoid this feeling altogether and only eat slider foods then it is easy to overeat and not feel that full feeling.

An example. If I eat eggs for Breakfast or yogurt and berries I can eat them easily and 2 hours later be hungry and looking for food again. Over Easter I decided to have the ocasional hot X bun. i only ate 1/2 a bun and had it toasted. Eating the bun was mildly uncomfortable but I carried on because I really wanted it ( yes destructive eating behavious I know). It didn't get stuck but it did feel uncomfortable enough to keep me full right up until lunchtime!

I don't profess to know the answer even though I have been banded for almost 4 years.I still have lots of questions as to how and why and what.I think we just all have to work with our band and try to do our best and make the best food decisions that we can.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
