Traveling after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have my surgery this Friday and I live three and a half hours from where I am having it. The papers say that doing so can increase the risks of pulmonary embolism, stroke and heart attack. I know this is going to sound stupid but has anyone traveled right after? My predicament is money for a hotel being as I am self pay for surgery. I will find it if I have to but if its not necessary then I would like to try and come home. What are your thoughts on this?

If you absolutely have to. I would stop every hour or two to make sure to walk about 5-10 minutes at your own speed and make sure you have plenty of Water to drink.

The pulmonary embolism is a danger if you are not moving regularly while your body is metabolizing the anesthesia. To combat this, walk at least 5-10 minutes every hour. It should say something like that in your discharge instructions.

I also live 3 hrs away from my clinic. I spent the night at the hospital and the following night in a hotel, as my brother in law was too scared to take me so far away from the clinic if something went wrong. I was told to stop every hour and walk around the car (I think thats where the embolisms come in, from sitting for too long).

Definately bring a pillow to put on your tummy, cuz every bump will be felt! Good luck on your surgery!

I had my surgery in Tijuana, and booked my flight for the next day due to the return flight being way cheaper on that day. I was aware of the risks, so I made sure to walk as much as possible right after surgery and the next morning before my flight. Make sure whoever drives you stops frequently for you to get out and stretch your legs, walk a little.

While I was in flight, I shifted constantly, and did squeezy butt and calf exercises to keep the blood flowing just because I was worried about the same thing.

Anyway, I was fine. You will probably be okay, too, but you should consider your doctor's advice first. Sometimes you can find a screaming deal on Expedia for a hotel room. Just keep in mind that being in a car after surgery is pretty uncomfortable.

Thank you so much. I can definitely stop and walk. I'm waiting for the Dr to call me back but the nurse said she is sure I will be fine as long as I stop and walk. I'm so nervous and excited its overwhelming :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
