hi everyone, :)last october i had my band slip also which was not a good feeling, i was doing so well and sooo proud of myself,i had it in for 6 months then it slipped but my doctor removed it and replaced it with a new band,a bigger one which i have realized is taking me alot longer to feel the restriction than what i had felt with the first band:huytsao. This band is taking alot more fills than the first one,my doctor said that being a bigger one it does take longer to get to the roght restriction,so in the meantime i am very slowly putting weight back on and im not happy!! :cryi go on to see my doctor again tomorrow so im hoping this fill will be the one!!, i noticed that some of you said that after you had it removed because of the slippage you did not get a new one put in,why is that? :confused:did your doctor go against it? i remeember when mine slipped i could not eat anything for 2 weeks, i could not even swallow my own saliva as it hurt, thats why i new something was wrong.

Jackie:

The DS stands for the Duodenal Switch. Basically, two things happen, one you're given a sleeve gastrectomy... meaning 60-80% of your stomach is removed... which is good in that, they remove the portion that produces a lot of the ghrelin (hunger hormone.) (Note: now they do only the VSG part alone.) The second part is the duodenal switch where they bypass the intestines. The good part about the DS is that they have the highest level of weight loss, most cures with regard to diabetes, etc. The negative is that it is the most prone to nutritional complications... severe anemia, osteoporosis, etc.

You can find out more on duodenalswitch.com or by googling it.

Karla

Thanks for the information. After reading about the whole process :star: it just reaffirmed for me that the lapband is the right one . I am just soooooo afraid of having things removed and rerouted in different ways than God intended. I will continue on my journey to try getting the lapband. Thanks again for the info.

Please keep us updated on how your doing. I am so afraid of losing my band...but I could at any minute. I am sliming/vomiting at almost every meal now. Of course it is totally my fault. I am eating and drinking all the wrong things. I am eating volumes of food and sweet tea. My band wont let me eat very much at a time, so I keep at it until its all gone. I have even went as far as drinking hot coffee with my BIG meals because it seems to wash it down so I can eat more. I am totally out of control. The sad thing is, how do I stop this and go back to my lap band rules? I have already gaines around 8 lbs back. Which is so sad because I really havent lost that much. Any suggestions would be great.

i also lost my band in april 2007. i had been banded for a year and lost over 100 lbs. now, like some of you, i eat everything i see. its just horrible. im waiting to see if i will be reapproved to get it put back in. so far since my band removal i have gained 24lbs. i just cant seem to get a handle on this thing. i can definitely notice changes taking place, ones that i dont like, which you would think would be enough to make me get it in gear, but my willpower level is at about a zero right now. i havent even looked on this board for awhile because i dont know, maybe im in denial. i need help!!!

You are too tight. I know that everyone's dream is to be too tight to eat, forcing us to lose like crazy, but that doesn't happen, over the long haul. Your body is very "smart" and it will teach you how to eat around the band. Creamed Soups, ice cream, and other high calorie liquids will not help you lose weight.

Get a small unfill and you will see a big difference, very shortly. For a snack, I had about 6 cherries last night. I was so full, I wasn't even tempted to beg a bite of my DH's chocolate bar.

I was too tight and dilated my esophagus. I had to be unfilled, then endure the months-long baby steps routine to good restriction. I gained 20 pounds.....all as a result of being too tight.

Ok so it has been 3 weeks since my band has been out. I lost another 4 lbs went to the Dr and he said I was too skinny for the band. I have never been too skinny for anything. he said I need to gain 5lbs to be eligible again. In other words when i come back I need to come back with heavy clothing, shoes, the whole deal and I need to stop "dieting" for a while. I totally freaked out. i have never been "free' and when I am I gain like other of you 10lbs ina week - easy. The nutritionist sat down with me and said no more fitday.com. no more shakes and eat on a regular size plate. I am still thinking about all of this. I want to be rebanded, my husband says no- he really thinks I can do it on my own and I am like most of you sad and crying some days. I still drink 2-3 shakes a dsay and eat one main meal with one 100 cal snack. I really realized this is a mental thing and witht he band I could go 3 days with nothing and still be ok so I know I can control my calories and stay at this weight, but I dont want to live life freaking out. I liked the band because it was the control facotr- it did stop me when i couldnt stop my self. This is what i have been doing. :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
