Insulin Resistance

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with insulin resistance last year

and was told to follow a low carb diet.My doctor had mentioned possible medication to help lose weight and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this. What kind of medication would help?I am not fond of pills and already take a thyroid pill daily but if it would help me lose weight, of course I would consider it!I am seeing her March 25th

I have IR and I take Glucophage also known as metformin. Btw I started taking it prior to getting my band and I lost 25 lbs within a couple of months. It worked great for me. The pill is large so now I have to break it in half to get it through my band.

Hope this helps!

Marsha,

I was diagnosed with ir also but stopped taking the metformin because it made me feel sick all the time. It cause my blood sugar to drop since I wasn't getting enough food. How do you manage keeping your blood sugar even with the band.

Chantal,

I was diagnosed IR and was on Glucophage XR prior to being banded. It helped to resolve my problems but has it's own lovely side effects (diarrhea). I stopped taking my Glucophage the day I was banded and I have to say that almost all of my IR sypmtoms have resolved with my weight loss (48lbs). Consequently, I took my blood sugar on Sunday and it was 70. Prior to banding it was 100-110 most of the time.

Are you banded yet? If so then you will have to take regular Glucophage or the generic Metformin as they can be crushed, Glucophage XR is time released and the size of a horse pill.

If your interested, a very good book to read is the "Insulin Resistance Diet," it helps you to understand how foods effect your insulin level...I didn't read it to lose weight but just to be more informed.

Good Luck!

I had insulin resistance and was prescribed glucophage, but couldn't really take it because it made me feel nauseous. I've been banded for 6 months now and have lost 50 pounds and now my insulin levels are normal and so is my blood sugar. I don't really watch the carbs either. For me, weight loss and exercise did the trick.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
