things have tasted off today for some reason

Recommended Posts

Started out with a Fiber One Bar, I know not the smartest choice but the quickest one since I got up for church, didn't quite feel my best but went anyway. Then my mom and I went out for lunch and shared grilled Tilapia, baked potatoe and salad, I ate one bite of potatoe, a few bites of fish and about 4 bites of salad, just didn't agree with me, didn't taste good to me for some reason. Then about 7 hrs later, and why 7 hrs I have no idea as I get hungry every 4 hrs I thought before it gets too late I better eat something so I fixed me some cottage cheese and 3 crackers, ended up throwing that away, just didn't sit well with me. Had a cup of Idaho instant four cheese potatoes I mixed with Water in the pantry and ended up eating that, that for some reason tasted good. Don't know if I'm getting sick or what but my taste buds have been off all day. Haven't wanted to eat all day. That's a first.

Sinc being banded, my tatses have changed...things I used to Love...no longer appeal to me and do not have the tatse they used to...

Example of this is salads...when I was always dieting, I LOVE salads, and would come up with all different ways to make them...well now, I have no desire to eat a salad, let alone lettuce!

I know many people who say the same thing....as the band suppresses your appetitie, it also cahnges your tastes.....and in my case, I simply loose interest in most foods or eating at all....can take it or leave it most times....

Before being banded I could, and would, eat anything you put in front of me whether I was hungry or not.....

Now, it does not matter if I ate in the past 12 hours or not...I can grab something like a chocolate bar and just stare at it....then throw it away....no taste or interest...no appeal.

THANK YOU BAND!

yes even as newly banded as I am, (1/15) we had a family birthday dinner last night at a local steak house.. they have excellent steaks.. I used to devour steak, baked potatoe, (loaded) salad with blue cheese , dressing, rolls with cinnamon butter .. then be ready for cake.. last night I ordered mashed potatoes and applesauce (I am not on solid food yet) however my point is I was perfectly happy, I ate about 3/4 of my potatoes some applesauce and when they served the cake of course I did not have it. I didn;t feel deprived or anything.. I could small everyone elses food but it didn't make me hungry.

love it...

I'm newly banded still in my mushie phase and food does not taste the same and I never really feel hungry. Its so weird, I'm struggling to get my fluids in because it feels like I'm full already that the Fluid has no where to go.

I never ate when I wasnt hungry, my problem was Portion Control.< /p>

Anyway, I know exactly what you mean.

Donna didn't you have a fill recently, if you did sounds like its kicked in and you're in greenzone, this happens to me till I settle into it. Maybe that's what it is.

Summerrain I did have a fill this past Thurs. Omgoodness, are you serious, the green zone? I just do not have a desire to eat and can go longer to eat in between meals. The surgeon put .25cc's in. Not quite sure what I'm up to, I don't think I'm up to 5cc's yet and I have a 10cc band. food just didn't taste right yesterday and here I am up this morning and not hungry having to force myself to eat Breakfast. I'm out of Protein shakes or I would drink one, ugh. Like to keep them on hand for something quick and times I don't feel like a meal.

thanks everyone for your wise inputs.

Donna

I am in the same boat as B-52.

I hardly ever have the desire to eat, and actually have to force myself to eat.. Because our bodies need the fuel.

food doesn't really appeal to me anymore, which feels strange because 2 months ago it's what my life revolved around!

Also my tastes have changed so much, nothing tastes the way I think it's going to!

Certainly sounds like greenzone, as others have mentioned things that once tasted delicious no longer do. One thing I have been told by my surgeon and nutritionist is only eat if you are hungry. There are no longer breakfast lunch and dinner but meals 1, 2 and 3. There are some days I'm only hungry for two meals. Just make sure you take your Vitamins and drink your fluids.

I think I have to disagree about you being in the green zone. I'm in the green zone and after 5 or 6 hours I get hungry. I'm wondering if maybe you're sick have a mild case of the flu. Even though I've had the flu shot I think I had a mild case about a month ago and I didn't eat for like a week. I wasn't vomiting or anything like that but I just wasn't hungry. Yes being in the green zone means you're not hungry between meals but if you go long enough you do get hungry for a meal.

I'm with Honk. You may be coming down with a cold or something that like that affects your taste buds. I have had a miserable head cold for the last three weeks (almost better now) and my sense of taste has been way off. Nothing to do with the band, just a cold.

I have gone 24 hrs with no desire to eat....if I'm busy I forget to altogether....have to remind myself I have to eat most days.....

As I started to get in the green zone, my tastes in food also began to change....

Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I was REALLY hungry, as before the band when I felt I am starving....have to eat or else!

Does not happen anymore....he band simply tells my brain I'm full, no need to eat, even though I am not full nor have that feeling...(impossible with the band).

Honk and Tracey could be right too. Just your description is what it's like for me being in greenzone. I'm rarely hungry nowadays but do experience slight hunger at meal times which goes away very quickly and there are some days I feel no hunger at all and just looking at food turns me of, no interest.

I guess the next few days or week will reveal if you're actually coming down with something or really are in the greenzone.

I've run into the same thing as the OP. The good news is that most of what I no longer think tastes good is much good for me. Better yet, I've developed more of an affinity for vegetables than ever.

I got my first fill today and asked the doc about this. Strangely, he'd never had a patient mention it. I thought it odd since I've seen it discussed here.

Oh, and I don't have the flu. ;)

Summerrain, but isn't breakfast supposed to "break the fast and start the metabolism"? I'm never ever hungry in the morning and have to force myself to eat something. Otherwise I could wait till 2 or 3 in the afternoon to eat. Help???

I guess I should start out by explaining that I'm on my 4th round of strong antibiotics for a cuticle toe infection due to a pedicure and then I started noticing my tongue is numb on the end and mouth burning with certain foods so nothing really tastes good with the exception of tonight. I made a small Quesadilla with low fat cheese, black Beans and onions and it tasted good to me. Who knows!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
