Whats An Egd? Does It Hurt?

Recommended Posts

I just went to visit true results and they suggested I may have a hernia bc I have gastric reflux?

Does getting an egd hurt? And what does it entail?

No pain. You'll be sedated and won't remember a thing. They'll slip a tube and camera down your throat into tummy to check it all out, takes only about 10-15 minutes. I think I was only at hospital a little over an hour total. You will have to have someone drive you home,

Not sure what an egd is.. But before I had my band done, they to thought I maybe had a hiatal hernia, so when I had my surgery, I sure enough did... they repaired it and now I have no more heart burn/ reflux YAY! and It didn't feel any different from the surgery I am guessing because it was all just recovery time and same steps. By the 3rd and 4th day I was feeling great! 2nd day is the worse..but that was the overall surgery for my band and hiatal hernia. :) Hope that helped!

Just had edg this am. Throat is a bit sore and I'm a little sleepy. Couldn't eat or drink after midnight and they put an iv in which stung a little. Doc was backed up so I waited about 1 hr and half. In and out in 3 1/2 hrs. Don't remember much of the visit.

I just had an Endoscopy and I think this is what you might be talking about. The last thing I remember is my Doctor putting the knock out drug in my hand and then I woke up and asked the nurse when we were going to get started. He laughed and said, "we are done!" No pain, no fuss. I too have a Hiatal Hernia that needs repair before the lap band can be installed. If the two doctors can get their schedules together both surgeries will be done at the same time and I will only have one hospital stay.

I like the info you gave here as I am going to have the same thing. Both surgeries at the same time and was wondering what it would be like. Sounds like you came through with flying colors.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
