Question About How The Band Physically Works

Recommended Posts

Ok guys I hope I can ask this in a way that makes sense.

I don't understand why you are supposed to eat foods that fill the upper part of your stomach, above the band, .... no slider foods, ice cream, etc.

So then what's the difference between doing that and eating food that comes back up? Does it just sit above the band for a few hours then your body decides it can't go down so it must come up?

Does this question make sense?

Do you want to eat food that goes through the band or not? Or goes through eventually? So is it

Most bites you chew properly will sit in the band for less than 1 minute, which is why many docs recommend waiting between bites. It all moves down to the stomach, just slower. The point is that it can trigger you filling full faster. Slider foods pass right through, so have little effect on satiety.

Ice cream is not a good food in general, high calorie, high fats, low Protein.

All food and liquid is supposed to pass through the band, nothing is supposed to come back up. It only takes about a minute for food to pass through the band if the bite is small enough and chewed properly.

The band constricts around your stomach and when properly placed, puts just enough pressure on the vagus nerve to help lessen the hunger response. You don't want slider foods because they immediately pass through so it doesn't trigger the "oh I'm not hungry" response. Slider foods are easily over-eaten and usually cause weight gain, like ice cream.

Ok so it's not really like having a new smaller stomach above the band. You want food to pass through fairly quickly but with enough bulk to trigger that nerve to tell you that you are full, right? But not so much bulk that it can't go through after a minute or so of trying.......yeah?

Well, it is like having a new smaller stomach only they refer to it as the pouch. The pouch can only hold a maximum of a cup of food, hence why we're told all meals should be a cup of food or less.

You want food to pause at the band but still move through without issue or prolonged lingering. Really, if you're taking small enough bites and chewing enough, you really don't even feel it or notice it.

So that pouch only holds any bites for a minute or so, or does it hold the whole cup? Anything that doesn't pass through the pouch and the band in a minute or so comes back up? So if you are going to pb or vomit because a food is no good for you, you know it right away, right?

You should be pausing between small bites, so the pouch shouldn't be totally filled up ever.

If you're PBing, then you're not taking small enough bites or you've found a food that simply doesn't agree with you anymore.

You should never, ever be vomiting with the band.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
