Band Question

Recommended Posts

So when you have band surgery your pouch is smaller imediately because of the band correct? I know people may or may not need fills to get to the "sweet Spot" but while you are healing wouldnt there be a little bit of restriction because your stomache is smaller? Even if you cant really feel it the change has started right? Just want to make sure that I am explaining it right. Sometimes it can be confusing and I dont want to give any wrong information to anyone.

I know even when i was off track I could never eat bread or dry meats.

Thank you as always

It really depends. Because everyone's anatomy is different, and surgeons don't all place the bands identically, there's a very wide array of experiences. Some people have a lot of restriction with just their band and no Fluid, others need their band almost full to have any.

I guess I dont understand how you can have 0 restriction if you have a smaller pouch. i understand you might need a lot more. but how can it be nothing?

Because smaller pouch or not, if the band is placing little to no restriction on the stomach, then food just falls through as if no band is there.

+1 to everything Missy has explained

Even if the band is there, AND has a small fill from the surgery, the restriction may not be noticeable yet

It is very interesting how different it is for each individual. I met a lady who never had a fill and lost around 150lbs. She was mad the Doctor would not remove her port. Then I meet people here who have had many fills but do not feel much restriction. And of course the only journey I really know for sure is my own. Thanks for your help.it is always appreciated.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
