Drinking Before And After Meals

Recommended Posts

Is this only main meals or are people not drinking before and after Snacks as well? Does it depend on the size of the meal? Just trying to figure out how to get in all the Water with smacks! Surgery is November 26th! Getting excited!

It is before/after any meal. For me, I worry more about drinking afterwards rather than before. Essentially, they don't want you drinking before so you aren't just filling up on liquids and have an appetite when it is mealtime. I have no problem having an appetite so I don't worry about the before meals. But that is just me and what works for me.

As for after, I would wait 1/2 hour after eating any foods so you stay satiated longer and don't just flush it through without getting the full effects. Just keep sipping throughout the day. :)

For me it means before or after I ingest any solid foods. Usually I am ok drinking a small amount before food but I need to wait at least 30 minutes after eating food or iliquid seems to push the food back up.

When I order food, I always have a glass of Water ready in case. But most doctors tell you too wait 1 hour after you eat. Guess if you drink water it will wash the food out of the pouch and you might get hungry again and over eat.

If you get stuck' date=' is drinking Water to help get un-stuck a good idea or a bad idea?[/quote']

My Dr said absolutely DO NOT drink anything to get unstuck. He said it will cause unbelievable pain. So that's what I'll do , follow his instructions.

As fas as drinking before and after. I'm allowed to drink up to meal, but wait 30 mins after.

no it doesn't help... makes it worse in some cases. If you get stuck, this will help you get it up... not down. mix water (a few table spoons), meat tenderizer (2-4 shakes) and a little lemon juice ..... drink and run to the bathroom...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
