Hi, I'm new the the very idea of banding. I'm going to a seminar on April 14 to learn about it. I'm not sure if I will be getting banded or not. I've considered Gastric Bypass Surgery but it's just too expensive and somewhat scary. I understand banding isn't quite so invasive and is 100% reversible if something goes wrong.

Right now I'm working out 3-4 days a week at the gym doing eliptical and weight lifting. I am so concerned that I won't be able to continue lifting after banding because of the lack of strength from lack of food. Is this concern justified?

What can I expect immediately after banding? Also, I read where someone lost about 16 lbs. just prior to surgery. What kind of special diet is it we're suppose to do before being banded? They wouldn't tell me anything until the seminar other than the cost which is just under $18,000.00.

I would appreciate any and all information you all would share with me.

Gale:

I was banded on 3/20/06. I did not have to have a pre-op diet except the day before I was to be on liquids. They told me this was so I wouldn't binge and eat "my last meal"!! Some people are put on liquids if they have a higher BMI I believe!? My BMI was < 50. Each doctor is individual.

What did you think of the seminar? Did you make it April 14th?

I was living in TN and had my band done there at $13,000 in an outpatient surgical center. I have since moved to FL. I am scheduled this Wednesday for my first fill. Yipppee....I think?!

I did have pain after surgery. But now 5wks later would go through it again if necessary! It was not unbearable but do-able especially with drugs!!

If you have any other specific questions feel free to ask!! Hope this helped!!

God Bless,

Melody

Hi Gale! Welcome to LBT! You've come to the right place for opinions galore!

Pre-op diets vary from doctor to doctor. Some require you to lose a certain number (like 10 pounds), some require a percentage (like 10% of your body weight), some require a time: 2 weeks of "my" diet, some require all liquid for a week or 2. It really just depends. Ours was a lo-fat, lo-carb diet for 3 weeks. We survived it... mostly, lol.

The general rule of thumb for post-op exercise is walking is ok from hour 1. Nothing over 10 pounds for 10 days. Then everything's fine as long as it doesn't hurt. Some doc's have more strigent rules, but the majority seems to just look at the first 10 days.

There is some adjustment to fewer calories, but weight lifting & exercising will actually help you a lot. Make sure you're getting enough Protein & be sure & tell your nutritionist that you work out -- she may need to up your calories some!

The biggest thing is to communicate with your doctor's office. If you're on the pre-op & are weak, call them & let them know. They may have tips or strategies to get you through it.

Keep reading here & ask any questions that come to mind! We're glad you're here!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
