Is Self Pay Worth It? Austin, Tx Area

Recommended Posts

Wow, what a jerk! Just browsing threads since I can't sleep. My insurance paid for my surgery in full (I had met my max out of pocket this year, 2 week, 100k hospital stay from a Pulmonary Embolism - no bueno!) but if they wouldn't of paid for it, I would of still found a way to cover it all myself. I just had surgery on the 12th, still a bit sore but otherwise I'm doing great and feel good about my decision other than the few "wtf did I just do" moments, which I hear are normal. Lol. So sorry about your friend's brother. I have a girlfriend that went to Mexico for a Sleeve. Her and her mom both did and they had a great experience, but I'd never go there myself. I'm in Houston and was banded by Dr. Christopher Reilly and I'm very pleased with him.

I was banded Oct. 6, 2012 in Reynosa, Mexico. This is across the border from McAllen. I paid 3800.00 dollars and was so worth it. My bmi was 33 and could not get it approved here using my insurance.

I'm waiting to see if insurance will pay too. I'm in Wichita KS. I'm going through a weight loss clinic here, but will have to go to Kansas City for the actual surgery. Self pay here is $17,900 which includes the first year of appointments and fills. I'm starting to think that I should check into other locations if insurance doesn't pay. Everyone else on here seems to be paying a lot less? Frustrating!

Banditchic, I would definitely check around, the $13,000 (Cincinnati, OH) I paid includes fills and nutritionist visits for the first 2 years.

I love my decision the first couple of days I was upset and angry at myself I was like I can't believe I put myself through all of this pain. But the pain is slowly going away the scale is decreasing so I'm happy. My cost ended up being $5500 because I had a hiatal hernia. Good luck to u!!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
