Disheartened about sizes

Recommended Posts

Hi,

SIzes are soooo confusing. I am 5'9/260 and wear a size 18W.:straight When I was 185 (many, many years ago) I wore a size 12 or 14. So I guess it all depends on your height and build. All of the replies sure support that theory!:)

dont be discouraged...keep your head up and keep striving.....it will happen for you....trust me I am 210lbs and wear 16/18 in womens and im still striving to just wear a normal 16/18.....i have had my band since Nov. 2004...so im still striving for a better weightloss as well....I am very thankful of what I have already lost which is 86lbs and I am just now in the routine of doing the other right things, like exercise and eating better.....

dont lose faith.....keep working at it, we are all different so dont let someone else body bring you down......

Wow, glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get the clothing size thing.

My highest weight was 289 and I could wear what I do now, which is a 22, but it was SNUG in the waist, the hips and legs hang off of me.

I can tell after my youngest daughter was born, I gained only in my front stomach and arms ugh! I could wear shirts 2 sizes smaller if it weren't for my arms and 2-3 sizes smaller pants/shorts if my waist were smaller

I hate sizes. Really. They vary so much. I want to be able to buy something in a regular store just once in my life. But I also realize that I am 5'11" and have a large frame. So that may never happen even when i am at a reasonable weight. You are right that it is discouraging, but I'll bet you look great.

I've learned not to care about sizes. I worked for a Fashion Bug Plus for a few years, and that same size in different labels in their own store varied in fit.

Another thing to remember for some of, we probably aren't supposed to get down to a small size. My frame is very petite, and as a teenager my target size was a 9. Now, of course, I am 33 and everything has changed. I have no idea what my size "should" be, but I am certain that it's no longer a 9!

I've never had children, but I hear that the body changes after pregancy, too. A friend if mine found that her shoe size went up permanently, even when she lost the baby weight.

I think that clothing has been one of the most frustrating things for me, so far. I started out a 22/24, tight by the way and then as they started to hang on me, I started buying 20's. Then they started to hang on me, so 18W here I come.....I was comfortable with the 18W, but then where do I go when that started getting loose? Right now, sometimes 16W fit, sometimes they don't. Sometimes I can find clothes in the "normal" section that fit, sometimes theyr'e too tight. I'm so confused. I hate trying on clothes in the dressing room, having them be too tight and feeling embarassed that I was too stupid to know my own size. Or worse, that people think because technically I'm still fat, I'm deluding myself about my large size.

So, chin up. You're not alone in the clothing battle. I think even the "beautiful people" have this problem. At least that's what I tell myself when I can't even get a pair of jeans up one generously porportioned thigh.

You know that not all brands are standardized fits. I have clothes that range from 18 to 26. It really can be frustrating when I shop. Dint think about the size numbers. you body will continue to compact after you stop loosing weight. THAT will be amazing! The stretchy clothes that I bought for comfort are the ones that are a bigger size, and I can still wear them. But I feel so much better and the fits are better too. Please dint focus on the size numbers. Its hard I know because we want gratification to remain motivated. I guess I can say that I want microwave solutions for slow cook recipes. Give yourself a pat on the back, your weight loss is great!!!

I have been dealing with this same thing since being banded. I am almost 6" tall and now weigh 217lbs. I started out wearing sizes 20W & 22W and now my regular 16's are to big and the 14 are to tight, but I wear a regular 18 in jeans and 16W in pants (for the length), can you believe that!

I have been gifted with pooty, hips and big arms, and I'm hateing the big arms part. I have such a difficult time buying blouses because the 14 fit's nicely except the arms and the 16's are to big so I try 14W to help in that area.

A while back, I went out looking for a black suit for an occasion and I was so fustrated that I could have screamed. I felt like I didn't belong in the regular sizes (RS) and the plus sizes (PS) were to big. Half of the time, I don't know if I should lokk in a PS or a RS store. I don't like sales people looking at me like I don't belong.

My DH (and neither do I) doesn't like baggy clothes so it's been hard in that area. I can't wait until I can just get out of PS all together.

It's good to know I am not swimming alone.;)

Clothes sizes are the one thing that makes me want to tear my hair out!! My best friend and I kvetch about this ALL the time...

I'm short (5'1" on a good day) - my best friend is 5'4"...

(We've both had WLS 1 week apart - she's RNY though).

At our surgery date, I was 248 wearing a tight 24.

She was 287 and wearing a tight 24.

Today, I'm 224 and STILL wearing 24 (loose, but not small enough for a 22 yet). She's down to 200 lbs and is fitting into a 16.

Hi,

I think most of us here can relate. I went from a tight size 28 to a 14W, 14, 16 . I had a TT last august and did not lose a size. I am still in a 14/16 and I actually feel really fat somedays. Since the TT, I can see more difficiences in other places (Like my huge thighs). Now I know why once under the knife (PS) its easy to consider it again...... Maybe I can have my thighs liposuctioned the next time.... Sh#%#$%$, I am actually considering this....

Babs in TX

334/180ish

-150 ish

They are the same exact size!!! Go figure. The capris are actually every so slightly biggger and they fit. I am going to wear the capris with the tags on!!! HAHAHA:whoo:

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
