Disappointed Big Time

Recommended Posts

my thoughts on this is that regardless of what surgery you chose RnY or LB you still need to try to eat healthier for the sake of your future.. for nutrients, and strength.

There are plenty of filling substitutes that would help you lose weight no matter what plan you chose. I know this sounds like somethng you wouldnt want to hear.. but at a fast food restaurant, chose the grilled or fried chicken salad and if your still hungry get a chili, or a plain ice cream cone.

At Taco Bell get the caesar salad taco. At chipotle get the bowl. If you want to fill full and you know you cant help put to over due it, overdue it with all nutritious things. If they are nutritious and the band wont let you choke them down.. voila! weight will be melting off.

just no more greasy things.

Huh? Shaking my head and re-reading.

Huh? Rubbing my eyes and re-reading.

HUH? Fried chicken salad? Ice cream cone? What are you thinking?

So, uh, fried chicken and ice cream aren't greasy on your planet then? LOL

LOL remember.. im not banded!

i was just pointing out to her.. that if she is going to eat bad things might as well be only half bad.. like grilled or fried chicken pieces on top of a salad.. or a plain icecream at 240 calories (mcdonalds) instead of a 800 calorie mcflurry

Just wanted to say that yes, the band is supposed to help make us feel fuller. I still have not found the "sweet spot", actually I have no restriction yet. However, I am trying to change my eating habits. I used to eat 4 "bad" unhealthy meals a day, now I eat 2-3.... I also joined weight watchers, and i am journaling to help me with my journey. Also, I am trying to exercise more. What can I tell you? We MUST keep trying! The band is only one of MANY elements we must change to be able to achieve optimal success! Do not focus on the band, try and change small things at a time. Do not get discourage! Some people are very critical but you must remember that to succeed we must go through the pains of change. For those of you who are feeling down for not loosing the weight, YET, Please do not blame yourself for what you have done. RIGHT NOW (this present moment) IS THE ONLY THING WE HAVE, WE CAN WORK ON THE POWER OF NOW!!!!!! Be conscious and aware of the present and start your day visualizing the best for you. Please start choosing Proteins and vegetables, EXERCISE helps alot to use your energy in a positive way.

WE CAN DO THIS! WE CAN SUCCEED:clap2:

If you don't even know what a RNY or a DS is, I don't think it is a good idea to go for a bypass. They ARE Bypasses.

Do your research or you are setting yourself up to fail. You need someone (a doc, or nutrionalist) to clue you in on the band.

Obviously somewhere there was a major breakdown of communication, unless this is a drive-by posting....

edited to add this was directed to BBD or BPD, whichever it was...

Another band-to-DS'er here ever-so-slightly tweaking some definitions. The RnY is a primarily restrictive but somewhat malabsorptive procedure. The DS is a primarily malabsorptive but somewhat restrictive procedure. They both "bypass" stuff, but they work very differently. (The band, of course, is purely restrictive.)

However, while the band and RnY people DO have to make more "intelligent" food choices...what constitutes intelligent for the DS person is changed, right along with the anatomy. For example, EVERY MORNING, I eat an egg (sometimes two), and some cheese (usually in an omelette, but if not, I melt it on the toast), and bacon or ham, and toast with Peanut Butter or cheese (on non-omelette days.)

My cholesterol is 119, my triglicerides are 117, my HDL is 64, my LDL is 32, and my VLDL is 23. (And all my other stuff is pretty good, too.) The REALLY intelligent choices that Rachele and I have to make involve taking our supplements and not going ape-shit on carbs. (And shit is the appropriate word, given what MOST DSer's bowels DO with a carb overdose.) And, in an attempt to not blame the victims, some DS people make all the right choices and STILL have deficiencies. But a few. Just like a few banded people have stomach necrosis, where the band kills the stomach.

Back to the topic...if you had/are thinking about wls without knowing all about what the various procedures are then you CAN NOT HAVE MADE AN INTELLIGENT CHOICE ABOUT WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU. Even if you do know, it can be a crap-shoot...but at least you can hit the ground running when you find yourself in difficulty.

So anyone who had RnY because Carnie did--or the band because Sharon Osborne did--had better be someone with outrageously good luck.

Back to the topic at hand...

Vanhos, given your history and the choices available, the band may be your only option other than dieting. And, if the band is not causing you any problems, then it would seem worth it to regroup and try again. If you ARE having complication, your next step would be a REALLY experienced DS guy...one who has done revisons from band and RnY--or flying solo.

good luck to you!

Vanhos - I can understand your dissappointment in comparing yourself to others who are losing faster - but you really should be proud of yourself for your loss!!!

A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with GERD based on a scope test. She is now on medication and the gas pains, nausea, and difficulty eating are gone. These were issues that made banded life miserable for her, but with one test and only a few days on medication, her life completely turned around. I would definately speak with your doctor - I am not trying to scare you or diagnose you, but your issue could be something that can be easily identified and treated.

No, the band is not for everyone, and I am sorry that you are dissappointed in its results. But your choices are to (1) have it removed (and possibly have another WLS?) (2) Do nothing or (3) Make the most of what you've been given. You've already experienced success - have faith that you can continue that! No matter what you choose, please be sure to continue seeking medical assistance to alleviate your pain. I wish you the best of luck and continued success!

I guess the big part of the problem with me was that I never overate because of hunger. Feeling fuller longer, I should have known, was not the cure for me. I need a brain bypass. I play so many games with myself when it comes to food.

I must say that I would gain weight faster if it weren't for the band. For that reason I am not totally disappointed. I have been dieting with a dietician and working out at a gym with a trainer 2x a week since March and have lost 9lbs. It's something, and I am thankful for it.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
