Portion Size Question For The Vets

Recommended Posts

I am on the last few days of full liquids. Surgery was 9/17. I feel great. My instructions from the dr's say small frequent meals - every 3hrs, 3-5 oz. Servings should be 1/4 - 1/2 c. I did that the first week, but it seems that the second week, I am hungry at meal time. I have pretty much gone to 3 meals and fluids and maybe a small snack in between. I can have a cup of Soup for a meal, and I do eat slowely. I have an Optifast for bfast (last weak it I was drinking 1/2 an Optifast - I am having full servings now).

Do you think this is okay - 1c Soup. It should be flowing right thru to the pouch - right?. I start puree/blenderized on Wed. 3-4 oz 3 meals a day, with 2-3 Snacks - 1-2 oz.

Any advice would be appreciated. I am not 'starving', I am satisfied and right now consuming under 700 cal/day..............regardless how it sounds, I am looking forward to blenderized meats!!!

***I just wanted to add, that with everything I have been remembering and measuring and dealing with recovery, I just realized today, going back and reading, that I haven't been following the 3-5oz every 3-4hrs., not a conscience decision.

yes...should be and if you're not hungry...don't worry. You can also supplement with an extra Protein Shake in there. These first few weeks are going too feel kinda like a roller coaster ride. That's why its called bandster hell. Some days you'll feel like the band is so tight, you won't be able to get anything down and other days, you'll feel like it isn't there at al. Just follow your doctor's orders and everything will even out in time. :) God bless!

I talked to my clinic and they said not to worry, liquids are going right thru and as the swelling goes down we get more hungry. Just be careful not to drink too fast.......... Next stage when I get to some more solids (if that is what you want to call pureed and blenderized) I will have to go back to measuring and probably more frequent meals and Snacks. But for now, liquids only, I am good.

I'm 7 days post op and my pouch def holds more than 8 oz of liquid. I can drink a cup of tea, 1 Protein Shake and a cup of Soup at 1 meal. The only instructions I was given is to drink 6-8 oz of fluids daily no caloric limits or quantities of how much soup to have. I drink as necessary.

My clinic is good with the liquids, no chugging, but need to get in a new frame of mind when I start with my blenderized and pureed this week.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
