Your Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hey, all!

Just wondering what your pre-op diet was like. My surgeon has us on a modified liquid diet 30 days before surgery.

I'm about 26 days from surgery and have been trying this diet for five days. The first three I did VERY well--yesterday and today--not so great.

Just wondering if I stick to it hard core a week to two weeks before surgery, will I be ok?

He has us on like two protien shakes and a sensible dinner--like SlimFast--drinking sugar free liquids in between. This is soooo hard.

Dana,

I will be going on my pre-op liquid diet for 4 weeks. I am not looking forward to that at all. Especially since I am going to have my entire family staying in my house for the Easter weekend!!! I begin on april 10th. I will be using Optifast with 1 small meal per day. My surgery date is May 8th. When is your surgery date?? Hang in there on the liquids. I'll be joining you soon!!

I have 15 days of Optifast, and I'm 'allowed' one cup of steamed veggies a day. I'm on day 10, but I'm not doing very well.... I have lost about 10 lbs though, so ... I guess that's ok... better than nothing.

All I can say is that you guys are awesome for being able to stick with a liquid diet for a MONTH... YIKES! Before being banded I couldn't stick with any diet for more than a day!

Man... I am really lucky my surgeon did not require a special diet pre-surgery!

My dr. doesn't do the pre-op diet thing. You just have to drink clear liquids the day before and fast between midnight and the operation.

What is the reason for the pre op diet?

Supposedly it shirinks the liver, making it easier to move and get around. You're lucky!

:omg: :omg:

I agree you guys are really strong. My one will be only 2 weeks and starts in 12 days.........it seems like there are so many different approaches to this doesn't there. Some have to do nothing.

But good on you all.............best of luck!:clap2:

I was on a liquid diet for 10 days before surgery.

After surgery it was one week clear liquid diet

2 weeks full liquid diet

2 weeks pureed foods

then slowly introducing soft foods for 2 weeks.

I did survive this pretty well. I had a good restriction up until about 5 weeks post-op. I was lucky about that. Some do not have this restriction and that would make these phases much more difficult. Your body is healing and it is very important to do what your doctor has asked. This is not the same plan I have seen others have but this was my journey.

Well--today is day 6 of my 30 pre-op days of liquids and one small meal.

It is also my darling baby girl's 1st birthday. Boy, did I blow it. I ate and ate and ate--potato salad, ham sandwiches, deli cheese and strawberries, chips, deviled eggs--and cake--and icecream.

I feel like a big fat cow--but I am near my period and I do tend to have a hard time with food around this time of the month.

I plan to go all force 14 days before my April 18th surgery. I just hope this one day hasn't caused my liver to swell like a whale! :)

Ahh--c'est la vie. All I can do is wake up tomorrow and start again--and try, try, try.

I really hope the band helps me to pull the reigns on my galloping hunger...

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
