First Appointment

Recommended Posts

I have so much to say and so many questions to ask. First off, I did find out that BCBS (Virginia) DOES cover this surgery! Woohoo. I called University of Virginia and now have my first appointment next week! That appointment is all day appointment that consists of tests, seminar, etc. Just that appointment is over $2,000! I'm soo excited but have one concern. Which is ... (your gonna laugh because it's not that serious) ...a Arterial Blood Gas. I am the by far the biggest baby. I'm so scared it's going to hurt. So opinions...is it THAT bad? It could be a few months (my insurance doesn't make you do the 6mo diet).

Here are some questions:

Does the fills hurt?

How long were you out of work? (I'm a correctional nurse, i'm not on my feet TOO much and when i'm there..there is always another nurse, could I be out just for a week?)

How often do you choke or vomit? (I hate vomitting!)

I've has a few fills and they don't hurt at all. I was really scared, I hate needles, and I couldn't imagine that it wouldn't hurt. My doctor uses lidocaine and it's just a small burning feeling for 3 seconds and the rest is pain free.

I was out of work for 4 days, but I have a mostly sitting job. I would say a week should be fine for you.

I'm about 7 months out and I haven't thrown up or gotten stuck once. Just be smart with your choices and you should be fine! I'm bad with anesthetic though, so they gave me a nausea patch behind my ear before I went in for surgery and it helped a lot, and I wore it for 2 days ha ha, so don't be afraid to ask for one.

Best of luck, feel free to shoot me a message if you have any other questions!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
