I'm Actually Kinda Hungry....is This Normal?

Recommended Posts

I'm three days post op, and I'm feeling a bit peckish this morning...

The nutritionist told me I wouldn't be hungry at all for the first week, and yet here I sit, hungry.

I had a cup of chamomile tea, and now I think I'll have some chicken broth.

Is there a limit on how much Clear liquids we can drink the first week? I mean, I'm not an idiot about to down several gallons, but what are the parameters, if they exist?

I was hungry the very next day. I don't think there is a limit to Clear Liquids. Just try to keep the caloric count low and stay away from fruit juices or beverages with sugar.

My nutritionist told me the same thing, but I was very hungry starting the day after my surgery. Some people lose their appetite for a while from the combination of anesthesia, meds, and swelling, but not all of us.

I wasn't given any restrictions on how much liquid I could have. In theory it's possible for anyone to drink too much liquid, which can throw your body out of whack, but I've never actually encountered anyone that happened to. My instructions were to drink 1 oz every 15 minutes, which comes to 72 ounces if you're awake 18 hours a day, and to call my surgeon if I couldn't drink at least 64 ounces a day. If your urine is pale yellow or clear, you're adequately hydrated. If it's medium to dark yellow, you need to drink more liquid.

not everyone loses their hunger. I am just now starting to have times when I'm hungry mainly in the morning I seem to be really hungry but throughout the day I never seem to be hungry keep sipping your broth I think the warm broth made my stomach feel so much better and with the gas I didn't have much room in there so I sipped through out the day. I don't think you have a limit I doubt you would be able to drink too much (calories wise) Sounds like you are doing great

I wasn't hungry at all, in fact I wouldn't drink anything either. I was having problems with my pain meds too.

If you are hungry try some instant Breakfast or something.

Well, I've been told clear liquids for the first week, so I'm going to stick to that for now. Can't wait for the Protein Shakes and creamy Soups next week!

I tried isopure(GNC) it's clear like juice but has more protien I would mix it with G2 it kind of taste mediciny if not diluted that is how I kept my protien up. I'm really big on high protien I know if you go to low it can cause Hair loss so I am almost phobic about it I even used the protien shots they are clear 120 calories and 26g and it is aonly about 2oz of liquid. I just don't want you to get burnt out on broth this week There are other options you can try that are still Clear Liquids

Get used to the hunger pains the first week or so. I was hungry by about day 3 as well. Though I was hungry, I couldn't really eat or drink anything until about day 5. So I was very weak. Not sure if you are experiencing that as well. I was told by surgeon to keep away from blended Protein Drinks until week 2, even though they are more filing. Was not given any restrictions on clear liquids/protein shots (they are HORRIBLE) I have not found any Protein Shots that I really like to drink, but I lived off of the Premier Protein drinks from costco. They are similar to muscle milk, but they have 30 grams of Protein. Hope this helps. Congrats on your surgery!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
