Why Am I Gaining??

Recommended Posts

I was banded June 5. I have either lost or maintained since the surgery. I hit my first goal of 42 pound down late last week. Then I gained 3 pounds and am still up 2 1/2 pounds. I am eating about 1000 calories a day , exercising at least an hour everyday and getting enough Protein. I hate to say it but for the first time I am discouraged. Don't really know what to do next. I get my second fill possibly on Monday

Our bodies are not machines. Our bodies react to foods, environment, medications, spices and our own particular cycles of life. It's very easy to retain 2-10 lbs of Water due to the same items I just mentioned. I gained 7 lbs of Water over a period of 6 days back in July. I lost it all in about 5 days the following week when all my relatives left town with all their chips, Cookies and crackers.

FYI-the initial weight loss in the first 6 weeks is mostly fluids. You will only lose 1-3 lbs per week of "Fat" from here on out. Your weight will fluctuate with the types of foods you eat, medications, menstrual cycles and sodium intake. You may plateau for weeks at a time only to have 3 lbs disappear over one weekend.

You're doing great, don't sweat the small or even large temporary setbacks. It's all good.

tmf is spot on!

Body fluctuations can be frustrating but totally normal. Even the female hormonal cycle can cause temporary fluctuations. I really wouldn't sweat just a couple pounds when you already know you're eating good foods and staying within your calorie limits. I would be willing to bet those last 2 1/2 pounds come back off soon plus some.

I agree with what all of the others have written...and would just like to add that it may be helpful to you to avoid getting down and discouraged if you become less obsessed with your scale. Try to avoid the temptation of weighing yourself every day. You end up causing unnecessary negative thoughts about your progress or lack of...

Weight loss is not a straight narrow path...small weight fluctuations are normal; if you continue to be compliant with your diet and exercise you have nothing to worry about.

Take a day at a time and be patient...the loss will come.

I have not had my surgery yet, but 42 lbs in one month is awesome! I am so grateful you posted this because my mind works exactly like yours, and I would (and probably will anyway) have asked the same question and been freaking out a little, too. It's a curse, always placing so much emphasis on what is wrong, rather than celebrating what is right! I guess some of us just go so many years thinking about things this way, that it's just hard to flip it around in our brains.

I will be the first to admit that I am a scale addict. I have weighed myself almost every day for the past 6 years. I will also confess that until I was critically ill and in the hospital 7 years ago I had not been on a scale for 20 years. That was one of the reasons I weighed in at 325. Weighing myself every day now has allowed me to lose 125 pounds so far, 40 pounds with the band. I am just not quite used to not dropping something every other day or so if I am working hard. And right now I am carefully measuring my calories and exercising at least 60 minutes a day. It just doesn't seem fair that I am working hard and I gained. I thought I understood this whole process but I guess not??!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
