Ihad the same problem with different scale readings! Here's a quick tip: Take a new 5lb bag of sugar (or flower, or whatever) and put it on the scale. If the reading is not 5lbs, use the adjustment on the scale to make sure that it does. This will give you a more accurate reading.

Also, make sure that the scale sits on a hard, level floor (not carpet). Hope these ideas help!

I keep everyone on this site in my thoughts! It is so good to have such a large "band" of friends who understand what I have done and why! Terri

I haven't been around for a while. But was happy to see this thread. When I was banded in January 05 I had a BMI of 60. I am 5'8 tall (large frame) and weighed 180kg which is 396lb. I am now a BMI of 38 and weigh 114.7kg which is 252lb. I know my goal weight (another 16kg/35lb) will be larger than some people's start, but too bad, its a victory for me, AND my band!

Hey, I have PCOS, too. I can relate. I am still pre-band, but have been trying to lose weight so I can have the procedure laparascopically. I dropped 20 lbs and my hormones went ka-flooy! I usually get a period every 36-50 days, and once the weight started coming off, I got 2 tiny periods every 2 weeks, followed by a heavy one two weeks after that, which put me under the table! PCOS women have insulin issues, which causes hormone issues (you know this already), plus the extra fat cells mess with estrogen- can't remember if they store the estrogen or mimick it... but either way it messes with everything.

I think when I started dieting and cutting back on sugars, my insulin dropped to a slightly healthier level, plus I was popping fat cells left and right. In my case, I was happy to have all the periods because they weren't bad and they lasted the normal amount of days.

It's a pain, but I'd say it's a good thing that your cycle is reacting to your weight loss. Having your period for 3 weeks though is not so good. Your OB could give you something to stop that. There are also natural hormone therapies that can help regulate your cycles and keep the "pregnant and on crack" symptoms at bay.

BTW I don't post much, but I do like this board, it's a great comfort. My starting weight was 365. It's somewhere in the 340's now.

I also have PCOS and have gone for long "periods of time" without periods! Then at other times I have had break through bleeding everyday for 10 months! Two years ago I bled continuously for 4 months and finally had to have hormone treatments and surgery to help stop it.

Now after weightloss my periods are spot on, I know within a day or two of when they will start, they are always for the same amount of time and for the first time in my life at the age of 44 I am what I would consider "regular"!

If you are bleeding for that length of time I would suggest you see your doctor and speaking from experience don't let it go on too long!

OK...

First off, yes I have major insulin issues, hyperinsulinism to be exact. So I eat carbs and my body starts producing enough insulin to cover an entire foorball team of carb loading athletes (non-scientific estimate, hehe).

About the period business, went to the doc this morning, and everything will be under control very soon with the hromone stuff he prescribed. He had to squeeze me in so I was there for 2 hours!:omg: My appointment was in two parts. Oh well all is well, and according to my weigh in ( I got an extra trip on the scale for goin to the doc :eek: ) I lost another pound :) Now to update my ticker.....

I haven't been around for a while but I'm back now with a vengence! I was banded April 29, 2005 and to date I have lost 148 pounds! I have a new life already but I still have a long way to go. I went to a website and just figured my BMI and I'm right at 50 but the day of my surgery I was 76.1 so in a year, I'm pretty darn proud to see it drop that much! I had some problems back in November and due to my own stupidity of not eating properly, I had a seizure and had to have all my saline removed until 2 weeks ago and I'm now happily back in the game! I still lost even without anything in my band but it was much slower but that was what my doctor wanted so I learned a lesson the hard way! I can't even begin to say how thankful I am to have been banded! My life just gets better every day. It's nice to have this thread where we all can relate to what others are going through that start out "super-sized." The day I stepped on the scale and was under 300 pounds, you could have heard me yelling in Dallas. I can't imagine the noise I'll make when I get under 200! But the best part is....I will get there! I have decided to stop pitching myself a pity party and get back on here and get encouragement and support from people that understand where I've been, where I am and where I want to be!

I so relate to that!

I’m 315lbs now (gasp – somehow I have regained all the baby-weight I lost after my daughter’s birth 10 months ago...no wonder I’m still wearing maternity clothes), and you’d think that I would be constantly aware of how H-U-G-E that must mean I am. But no. I feel humungous when I try to get on the floor & play with my kids, or when I bump into something I thought I had plenty of room to clear, but usually I am fairly OK with myself. And then I catch a glimpse of what I really am in the mirror, or worse, on film. Yikes. Enormous. When did that happen & how did I not notice? I’ve always been the chubby girl among my friends, so it did not happen over night, but it sure feels like it!! And then you hear how anorexics always think of themselves as “so fat” even when they are toothpick thin. It is the opposite for me...I’m massive, but only really remember it when I’m uncomfortable physically or visually reminded. And maybe that is the flipside of eating disorders, too -- who knows!?!

My insurance has a morbid obesity rider available, but my husband’s company refuses to add riders of any kind to plan options. Money is too tight for self-pay. So I remain un-Banded & waiting... Thanks for starting this thread!

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
