A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

Recommended Posts

It's that time of month for me to start retaining Water, and I typically retain about 8 lbs, so I know I won't get anywhere near an accurate scale reading, but I weighed this morning anyway. Today is my 3 week-iversary and I'm down a total of 44 lbs (hopefully in another week or so my Fluid retention will drop and I'll have a lower number!). I was a BIG Water drinker pre-op (160+ oz per day) so that's where a lot if it came from me in the beginning, and I can see it in my dry skin, but I do have on pants today that were too tight to wear pre-op.

Do any of you think of your weightloss in terms of going back in time? This morning, when I weighed, I thought - "Wow, I now weigh what I did this time of year on 2004, I've taken off 2 years' worth of weight!" I do that all the time. I have a mini-goal set for mid-May, and I think, "Wow, the last time I weighed that was February of 2005!"

Ok ya'll maybe I am strange but I just went to my surgeron's web site to their BMI calculator to see how much weight I have to lose to get out of the MB category. Ok it was depressing, I dont recommend anyone doing it.

I go for my first fill on Friday. Wish me luck, I need some restriction, I have none right now. I was banded on Feb 8, did great until I started eating again.

I have to admit, I am scared to death! This is a whole new way of life and I am scared of failure. I feel like this is my last chance!

hello, i am pre-band-no surgery date yet-i hope in may or june.

i think i weigh 375 and @ 5'3 1/2", my bmi is 65!!! i get so discouraged

to think about it--having to lose about 200 lbs. at least. i KNOW i will be

all wrinkly and saggy and will not be able to ever have any cosmetic

surgery, but hopefully i will live longer. i would like to be able to take a

shower again w/o a shower chair-you know -maybe actually stand up!!

not have to ride my scooter when i have to go out in public. i don't use it at home--but i am sure my kids hate me having to use it for ball games,

school functions, etc...........oh, well , i know i have a long way to go--

and i am committed--i will look for the small victories ....:straight

Hi Babyjane ,

I think it is great that you are maybe getting banded in a few months. I'm really close to you in weight and was just banded 2/27. I can't begin to tell you what a difference it has made in even this short of time. I've only lost 20 lbs which you wouldn't think would make much difference considering I too have about 200 to lose, but boy howdy! It has made an amazing improvement in my energy level, my knees don't hurt nearly as bad and I can walk farther without getting winded. I can bend over (and get back up) and can even squat and return to a standing position!I am diabetic and prior to surgery was on 85 units of insulin a day plus 3 other kinds of diabetic pills. I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE INSULIN ANYMORE! Even my diabetic meds dosage has been cut in half. :whoo: I feel so much better. I try not to think about how much in total I have to lose, but am reaching for "mini goals" in 10 lb increments. These small victories seem so much bigger and are more frequent!

This is a wonderful website with lots of support. You'll find most of us share similar struggles with our weight and life problems. It's great to have a place to go that you feel absolutely safe discussing ANYTHING on your mind with NO fear of being "put down". I look forward to getting to know your better . We're all in this together. Have a very blessed day!

I tried to post this yesterday but it wouldn't let me.

Babyjane my heart goes out to you and if there is anything that I can do let me know. I can check with you to see if you are drinking your Water, eating Breakfast, having more veggies, exercising ie hand weights and more. You don't have to wait for surgery. Somebody coined the phrase long time ago.....Live Like You're Banded.....water, exercise, Protein.....:)

teresa, thank you---i am sure i will start doing more to get ready

for the band---i have already done some small things--trying to chew food extremly well, eating slower, etc--i love Water, but still do not thnk i drink enough. when i drink large amounts-it just sloshes around in my stomach for hours. i also take diuretics--so peeing and drinking are big

parts of my day!! the banana with the boobs is so cute!!:biggrin1: :)

Babyjane, you are going to shine! :)

I'm down just over 50 lbs. Judging from how my pants fit, I'd guess 30-ish of that to be fat. I wish I had the presence of mind to take measurements and nekkid pics the night before surgery, but I fell asleep -- with a lot of stuff undone that I had planned to get to. I plan to shop this weekend for a body fat analyzer.

Hi everyone! I'm pre-op, have approval, waiting for a date. I currently weigh 341, 5'9" tall. I have a goal to weigh 180lbs. I have been obese all my life, since childhood, not so bad then, but after getting married and babies the weight has crept up. I'm not quite as heavy as I was when I delivered by children, but I'm getting close. The lowest weight I ever remember was 210 when I was on nutrisystem. I looked darned good, that was also 17 years ago :) .

Hoping to be a loser soon!

I was Banded September 9, 2005

I can not be more happy. my weight before surgery and before i stopped the nasty diet coke was 347. I have had several small fills, my last was 0.25cc on 3.2.06 and it kicked in the last few days. I have lost 7 pounds in less then a week.

Last weekend i had had it, my clothing looked like i was a slob, I went out and purchased a new pair of jeans, i had been in my sameold sameold 24-26 gloria vanderbelts. Well i got a size 20 and they are a bit loose. I know many say dont go and get new clothing, but OMG let me just say this, spend a bit on some clothing so you can see your weight loss.

I got some 10.00 t-shirts at wallyworld but spent 30.00 on jeans at Macy's. IT WAS WAY WORTH IT!!!!

I know many say dont go and get new clothing,
Oh geez... between Jan - Dec '04 I lost 120# on a modified low-carb diet. I bought an entire wardrobe for every new size. Of course I also kept a few of my big n' baggy comfies, which are now my everydays. :rolleyes

I was so happy to be in the lower sizes, I'd got to "look" just to see if I was down another one yet, and come home from LB with 5 bags of clothes. So the good news is, I have a few sizes' worth of clothes, and it should be a while before I need to buy anything, I have 32 to 22, 5x to 1x, and everything in between!

We could host a heck of a clothing swap on this thread!

I started at a BMI of 48.9 back in November, I am now a 34.2 BMI.

The wildest difference is indeed the clothing. Sometimes I pull a pair of pants out of my closet, and look at it and think "that won't fit me:, then I put it on, and it is too big!

I'm wanna be 350 pounds :)

That was my first goal!

I'm 5'9" and weighed 403 before I had my surgery on July 27. I had lost 80 pounds by the end of the year but have since gained back 20... *sigh*

For some reason I just never thought I'd have to worry about gaining weight back this soon! :faint: I know why it's happened and I'm trying to take back my control. I could really use some good thoughts and prayers if you're so inclined.

Why are you gaining your weight back -- what can we do to help? I can't do much in the prayer category, but perhaps advice? Suggestions?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
