What foods can you eat per your doctor/nutritionist's post-op diet?

Are you on a restricted calorie amount? I believe I was on 600 calories for the first couple of weeks. I also was allowed to drink Water with meals during that time. It was hard to feel full for very long, so I just ate about every 2 hours. Bean with bacon Soup was a lifesaver for me. It was thick and high in Protein. If you need to, blend it a bit before heating it. I also ate a lot of Swanson's vegetable broth. The warm food seemed to satisfy me longer.

As for 64oz of Water, I buy the 16.9oz bottles of water and have one in my hand or sitting by me all the time. We tend to ignore feelings of thirst, and often confuse them for hunger. So I'm trying to train my brain to reach for the water at the first sign of thirst or hunger. I can often go another hour after thinking I was hungry, just by drinking water.

No I wasn't told to restrict calories.LOL and I have a bottle of Water all the time next to me and I sip it pretty often. I am gonna try the Soup thing and blend it. Thank you for the help. Wanda

That sounds like the same diet I had the first week post-op. My nutritionist specified that Water in the Protein mix counts against Water, so maybe that helps. You could put a scoop (~25gm protein) in 16.9 oz bottle of water, that way just by getting your Protein in you've also gotten in 40 - 45 oz of water. What makes it hard for you to get your water in?

As for the hunger - water. :) It will satiate you for a while, even when you're hungry. I can't give you any better advice b/c we're having opposite reactions. I was banded March 1 and have yet to feel hungry. I'm maxing out around 3 oz food per day. Then again, I'm constantly sipping water, too.

OMG!!!!!!!!! Well I was mixing the Protein mix with the skim milk. I was drinking crystal light and the Isopure drinks.But never counted that as part of the Water intake. (duh) I was trying to drink the water as a separate 64oz of fluids.Guess I also need to sip more.

Here are some things that helped me.

*V8 juice with beef broth mixed in with it

* Protein shakes mixed with Tropicana light orange juice instead of milk and some ice. I think it tastes like and Orange Julias. In fact the rest of my family likes these also.

* cream of chicken Soup

* Isopure clear Protein drinks from GNC

* Egg drop soup

Remember you can have several Protein Shakes throughout the day and they help curb your hunger. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

If you can eat mushies, here's what I'm living on right now:

  • Rosarita Chile & Lime refried Beans. MMMMM! I can't stand regular refried Beans, but these are SO good. A few dashes of tabasco & I'm good!
  • Cottage cheese
  • Tuna w/ mayo. Albacore, the kind you get in a pouch. Yummy, comes in a 4 oz size, and the meat is dense enough that you can actually chew it up.
  • Campbell's Select in "Blended Red Pepper and Black Bean". MMM!

I can also do deli chicken & turkey, tofu, etc. -- just haven't added them into my diet yet. I'm still only eating 2 or 3 oz food per day, and there just aren't enough meals to accomodate my available selections yet.

I can't wait until I can do real chicken & get a chicken bol w/ beans & pureed hot salsa from Chipotle, and add my own lowfat sour cream to moisten it up. :)

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
