Lap Band And Your Manly Man Friends

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if your friends think you are a sissy because you got a lap band.

I'm finding some friends of mine think I'm wasting my time going to the gym and eating anything but cheeseburgers, hot wings and drinking beer.

I have a hunting buddy who insist on trying to feed me things I can't eat. I can eat dried deer steak and biscuits and gravy anymore. He laughs and tells me to MAN UP.

I've explained many times I just physically cannot eat that stuff anymore. I pack my own food for the hunting trips but he just ignores me.

TJ, most of the guys I hang out with are actually envious and/or very supportive, but they aren't the most masculine fellas either..lol Most of my friends are sci-fi comic book geeks such as myself. The only callouses I ever get on my hands are from playing guitar...lol!

I actually think it takes a much stronger man to be able to make a lifestyle change that you and I have chosen...So next time challenge them to drink liquids for 5 days, survive being stabbed 5 -6 times, and then control your eating the way we have to. Now THAT is a MANLY MAN! *high five*

I am not a man but just look at the weight you have lost.

You have to be doing something right.

I think any guy who sticks up for himself is a MAN.

AND a guy who can not comprehend what he is being told is the sissy.

Maybe you need some new hunting buddies!

Just me two cents worth!

I don't know if it's the same for guys as for women, but I do know many women cannot handle another friend's success, especially if they were eating buddies. That may have been what they had in common.

Also, some are also threatened if they need to lose weight, too. I've been up & down all my life & have more than one "friend" tell me if I lost anymore they don't want to hang with me. And they were thin!

Take care of you & tell them to . . .

Eat his dried deer steak and then PB it all back up over him! Some people don't believe what they can't see.

Just joking, but sounds like your buddy is a ****** bag!

I just got mine. I talked about it with my buddies and got nothing but support. That helps a whole lot.

I think that guys tend to look at getting the band as weakness. A real man would just "suck it up" and exercise and diet like a man would do. Plus guys just like to give each other a hard time in general. My friends and I are always riding each other about something it seems. Just my view.......

Most of the guys I work with was/are supportive to me. Just one guy is negative. I work on a Marine base so there is a few thousand manly men that I deal with, some I havn't in a while are really suprised when they see me!

I work in a a men dominated work place. They have all been extremely supportive. I'm very open about the band and will talk about it with no reservations, however, the interesting thing I see is that many of them want to ask me questions, but, will not openly ask. They will take me aside and start asking the questions.

At first, the rumor around the workplace was that I was terminally ill due to the weight loss and a couple of them finally got the nerve to ask me what was wrong and if I was ok. When I told them I got a lapband they looked at me puzzled and thought I said a lapdance. lmao

Dude-

If your friends or anyone else for that matter aren't showing the support you want, need or expect, find new friends that do! You've made a major lifestyle change to better yourself, they're probably just hopeless and jealous! Good luck and congratulations to you!

I agree you need to find new friends. if they cant be supportive you dont need them. Let them have heart disease and health probems as you get healthier for you. Besides who says you cant eat those things you still can just in smaler quantities. I ve gone out with the guys and have ordered cheeseburger sliders take off the Buns eat the meat. ive had wings like 6 or 8 not the 20 i used to eat.

I can physically eat most things but I'm very cautious. I don't want to fall into the trap

Of eating bad foods again.

The friends part is really a no problem thing. My job prevents me from having "hang out buddys".

Ahh hunting buddies are normally very good friends. Just because he's a good friend doesn’t mean he can't be an ass. Next deer season just show him who the better man is by walking in further, and dragging your own deer out while get's the ATV and sled. Hunting can be a real endurance challenge; I can’t wait to fit into my camo coveralls I bought a few years ago and have some extra space. Last deer season I hiked across hells half acre, I'm sure the deer could hear me breathing a mile away!

Well first if you were an alcoholic would he insists that you drink with him? Or would he tell you to take cocaine? No 1 knows what it's like to live in your body except for you.

Can you compromise with some of your food choices. I've never eaten deer meat. Does it have to be fried? There are some foods that I don't eat everyday or even once a month. That doesn't mean that I don't eat those foods as a treat on a rare occasion.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
