It really isn't something you just decide to have done. If you have a lot of medical issues related to your weight, will make you a perfect candidate.

Your BMI is only 33.3, so you would have to get approval. I think that medicaid does do lapband approval, but it would depend on what the doctor said on your behalf! best wishes, Karen

At 195 I would say no unless you have obesity related health problems. But you can work that out, I wish I started at 195!!

I would think that medicaid would not approve it if you are only 195lbs and 5 4

The Lap band is not a diet . It is a life changing event and it is not a walk in the park it takes lots of dedication and a life style change. I wish I had a dollar for everytime someone says wow I want one, it must be so easy and I explained to them what the process involves and that the surgery is the easy part.

There are foods I just can not eat anymore,1. I don't go out and order what everyone elses orders, 2. the portions are just huge, 3. I eat Protein first and by the time I chew it to pass my band I am full. 4. certain food are NO No's for me bread just doesn't go down for some people it does never has for me. 5. liquids with a meal defeats your purpose. 6. You still have to eat healthy. 7. You have to excercise and be active.8. You can and will get stuck at sometime. 9. you will have moments when you wonder why you did this.10. eventually it will cost you $$ for fills and unfils.

I love my band, but I always tell people who think it"s the answer for them the truth , it takes dedication, and it is definently not for some one who wants to just lose weight. You need to be ready to change your life, for me it was the best thing I ever did for me..but if you read this site some folks have a difficult time living the banded life.......... :)

Many thin people have back issues. I doubt you will get approved at your weight. And I don't think they will take your families health issues into account.

My doctor wants me to do at least 30 minutes of cardio 7 days a week. For now I would try that part of the lap band journey and see if you loose weight.

Also I've cut out fried foods and more or less all refined carbs (breads, crackers, candy, cake, Cookies, soda, ice cream), I've don't eat hamburgers (on a regular basis), pizza, or fries.

I eat mostly skinless chicken breast (not fried, no breading) and low fat/cal veggies.

If you follow these rules you will probably loose weight without having surgery.

i dont know if you insurance would cover it or not but "Honk" had a good idea. Follow the Lapband eating plan for a month and see how you weight does. Protein 1st, then veggies or fruit, than carbs. limit the junk food to an occasional treat, not a daily junk fest, and exercise a minium 3-4 x a week. Try tracking your food intake on Fitnesspal.com . What an eye opener that was ! You have to be commited to these food and exercise changes if you do get banded so start practicing now. Either way you're ahead of the game ! Good luck !

I'm 5'5" and 193 lbs. I'm paying for my band which will be done on Wednesday. My *** won't do it. This is so important to me that I've decided to pay the $15,000 myself. I've real 1000's of posts on this site prior to making my decision because if it was easy, wouldn't everyone be doing it? Good luck to you. I hope you find a way to get it done. :-)

It is approved for BMI of 30 or more now; however, most insurance will not pay unless you have a 35 BMI with two or more comorbidities or else 40 with no comorbidity. Also, you must have had this BMI for 3-5 years. For example, if you had a 30 in 2010, a 38 in 2011 and a 42 in 2012, you probably wouldn't qualify to have the insurance cover it. There are several people on here who are self -payers who could point you in the right direction.

Medicaid in most states requires a 6 month monitored diet prior to requesting surgery.

I am 5'4" and weighed 190.5 lbs at the time of my surgery. My insurance covered my surgery but at the beginning of the journey I had weighed 284.5 lbs. I also had several other serious health issues related to my weight. The Lap Band is a Life Style not a diet.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
