I'm going to go with a liquid diet 3 days before just so my body is "clear" for surgery and recovery. I'm wondering if doing the Atkins diet will speed up weight loss post op. I want this fat GONE!

I was put on a similar diet prior to liquid diet. And I'm being put on that afterward too. Basically my guidelines are:

Daily:

20-30 g of fat

30-50 g of carbs (closer to 30 if no exercise)

70+ g of Protein

I lost like 13 pounds in a couple of weeks so it works. And that's what I have to follow afterward too. ESP because I will need the Protein because i will eat so little.

Are you guys being given a diet for after the band?

That looks like a reasonable diet plan. Low in carbs and fat. Lots of protein to keep you feeling full. Plus you already lost 13 lbs?!!! Awesome!

Yea, its actually VERY doable and will guarantee that weightloss after you get the band. From what i keep being told by my doctor and others is that after the band, the most important part is what you eat in order to lose. basically you'll have to avoid all breads and stuff. but its so doable when you go out to eat! Get chicken or salmon with the veggies and you're full and set! and i appreaciate that its also low in fat and not just carbs. you stay full and lose very quickly.

did you doctor give you guidelines for food afterward?

Some Dr's require such strict diets because they want the liver to be as small as possible. some don't seem to mind as much. I was required to do low-fat/low-cal, but you may be on to something with the trying to get used to the change.

yea, it seems all the dr's are different. i was told it for the liver to shrink so they could do it laproscopically. but i think there is some reason to the whole getting us used to it. i started off having one shake, 2 meals and then last week i had to do 2 shakes, one meal... and now this week and next is all shakes/liquid. so it was gradual, which i appreciate for the reason of getting me used to it more than anything.

Has anyone taken Phentermine to help with hunger on their pre-op diet? Just curious.

I followed the pre-op diet without cheating and my liver was still too big....they said that my liver was 3 to 4 times it's size but they still did the surgery....it just took them longer. They said the reason my liver was so big was because of my morbid obesity. I weighed 283 at time of surgery. They said my liver wasn't damaged but if I would continue to eat bad that the next step is liver damage. So u will be o.k.

Has anyone taken Phentermine to help with hunger on their pre-op diet? Just curious.

I took phentermine once before considering lapband and it was horrible...I felt high, went a whole day without feeling hungry, fast heartbeat, cotten mouth....I can see how people would lose weight but its really not healthy...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
