how did you eat BEFORE the band vs after

Recommended Posts

hi guys, I am not banded but I am definitely considering it and have a few consultations with various doctors scheduled this month, but I wanted to ask what kind of eating habits did you have before being banded and whether or not you have been successful at losing the weight.

If you have been successful at weightloss, are you where you hoped? Has anyone ever wished they had gotten at Reux-en-Y instead for the dumping syndrome?

I personally have pretty screwy eating habits. In order to lose weight I have to be on a vegetarian/vegan diet (which i am off of now because of weakness). It is the ONLY time I have ever had success (a -60 lb success at that). The temptation that follows me is unbearable unless i completely restrict it out of my life. (and its still bad unless I have exercising like crazy - which I no longer can do because of degenerative joint disease/rheumatism)

i wanted to know, can you guys resist getting 3 meximelts at taco bell instead of 2? are you still hungry or Truely full after restriction with just ONE taco? are you full, or FULL - like "this will do me for the rest of the night full"?

what about golden coral? can you really fit down everything you would have desired? When did you stop desiring as much food as before? Is it a real desire?

thanks

Golden Corral is a waste of money. There is no way I could eat enough for what they charge for the buffet.

Today, my 3yo son and I were running errands and we stopped in a little diner for lunch. I order him a hot dog, ff, and sprite. I ordered me a souvlaki on pita. That's it. No fries, nothing to drink. I ate a few of his fries, about 4 pieces of the souvlaki meat, and had a few bites of the pita bread. That's it! I was, however, still hungry but 3yo's don't sit still long enough for Mom to finish slowly, slowly chewing and eating, so I got a box and went home. Then I sat down and spent the next 20 min eating the rest of the sandwich. It was very yummy!

Compare this to pre-band, where I would have ordered the sandwich, the FF, a large sweet tea, and a side greek salad and would have eaten it ALL, and then had a full dinner. Plus Snacks. Geez, no wonder I was so fat.

So, yeah, it kind of changes how you think of food. It just isn't as important as it used to be. I still get the "oooooh, yummyyyyy!!!!!!!!!" experience with food, but with a whole lot less.

If you are really going to hold on to your food fantasies and not change your eating, you should think twice about WLS. Those are the habits that prevent weight loss with the band, and cause weight re-gain with RNY.

It's more than just feeling full on smaller amounts of food. It still takes effort and sacrifice, it's just that now, with my band, my efforts actually get me somewhere because I can do it so much more consistently.

Let's use your two examples:

Taco bell

before band - 1 Nacho grande, 1 supreme taco and a frito burrito

with band - 1/2 a nacho order

Golden Corral

before band - everything

with band - a few bites of a few things

Before the band I tried diets but my problem was that I couldn't resist the food demons and I would go binging after dieting.

Now, when I have good restrictions (which it took a few fills to get that) I have no problem with portion size. I do feel full and satisfied after one taco or whatever. And there's so many times I say "that looks so good but I literally couldn't eat another bite" and I'm serious!

Now, that said, I still think I'm a slower loser than some because I make bad food choices. I shouldn't be eating at Taco Bell, regardless of whether it's one taco or 5! It's junk food! I don't desire food in the same way I did before but I still get cravings for fast food or whatever, and I have to try to deal with it like I tried before, but I can deal with it better with my band b/c I can't deny myself Taco Bell for lunch and then go eat 8000 calories at dinner.

I'm really new to this but wanted to respond because I've seen a difference even though I'm not filled yet.

So before banding at Taco Bell (good example)

Two Burritos and Nacho's Supreme (wow that's a lot of caloreis)

After banding but before Fill

Two Soft Tacos and I'm stuffed.... (I'm hoping for only one taco after fill)

Also I've noticed that I can actually get full from a bowl of raw baby carrots. Before I could eat a bag and still be hungrey. This is how I force myself to get in my veggies.

My surgeon just asked me the same question yesterday when I went for my first fill. I am earing about 1/3 of what I was pre-band, which is really amazing to me. And I don't feel deprived, either...I can usually have a couple of bites of something if I really want it and then stop. It's like a miracle, and I'm SO thankful!

I don't know what Golden Corral is so I can't give info there.

As for Taco Bell, I'm only 12 days out, and haven't actually eaten at Taco Bell yet, but I know pre-op I'd get 5 soft tacos and nachos bel grande, or I'd get a quesadilla and nachos. Judging from my hunger lately I'd get an order of pintos and cheese and it would last me all day.

RNY has its built in behavioral modification points, like dumping, as does banding, with PBs. Dumping (IMO) is basically "I can eat this without it being metabolized", which also IMO was a little too close to purging behavior. I know you don't truly purge it, but you're still eating something you know you shouldn't, and willing to face whatever the consequences will be to keep it from being metabolized. I know people with RNY who plan this -- "I really want this donut, but when I eat it I'm going to dump, but that's ok - I'll take the pain if it means I won't really absorb the badness." I don't know any banded people who say, "I know I shoudn't eat this, but I'll just PB it back up so I'm going to go ahead and eat it anyway". But that's just the people I know, and isn't necessarily representative of anything.

The quantity of the foods I ate astounds me! I won't go into the types of food, but you are all familiar with the styrofoam containers that are about five inches square, divided sections, closeable lid? Well, stuff two of those full of food and I could eat it, in one sitting! I swear, it just about makes me gag to think of stuffing all of that down into my body. I was never empty! Gross. *laughs*

Now? I eat 3/4 to 1 Cup of food and I'm done. I used to crave anything made with flour. Now it occassionally crosses my mind but I just shrug it off because I am too afraid of a PB to try it! Yay! I never had a sweet tooth, so that's not been a problem.

i wanted to thank everyone for your answers on eating before and after the band. I always thought I was different for being able to eat so much.. although I dont do it at every meal, it seems to be some months on and some months off where I get into these crazy food binges.

I never packed in so much food that I got physically sick- i just think my stomach must be two foot ball sizes instead of one.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
